A man has revealed the heartwarming reason he had a koala in his trolley while shopping at Aldi.

Peter Elmore and his wife Kelly, from Hastings, Victoria, were on holiday in Portland when they stopped by the town’s local Aldi store for a grocery run.

It was when they were in the store’s car park they discovered a koala had become trapped, turning the pair’s quick shop into a rescue mission.

But luckily the couple are wildlife volunteers and have experience with rescuing koalas.

“There was only one way in and out of the carpark, and the koala was cornered,” he told 7News.

“She was trying to climb the high wooden fence and kept falling.”

Peter said because koalas can’t put their arms out to protect themselves when they fall, she kept landing on her head and bashing her face.

“Then I saw an elderly man nearly run over her and I knew I had to get her out of there,” Peter told the publication.

He used the Aldi trolley as transportation, adding that he would have put her in the back of his car but he had his dog with him.

“And I would’ve carried her, but then I saw the Aldi trolley and thought that would be a bit easier,” he explained.

Peter pushed the female koala about 100 metres until he got to a bit of bushland where he then released her.

He said she was quite relaxed and happy to be rescued.

It comes after a TikTok went viral of Peter pushing around the native animal in an Aldi car park.

He told 7News he didn’t know he been photographed until he saw the footage.

“I can see that it would’ve looked a little unusual,” he said.

“But the trolley was just there to help out the koala, it was very handy.”
