Fake German heiress Anna Sorokin has fashion meltdown in New York court
Anna Sorokin’s broke down in tears after being forced to wear a prison issued ensemble into court — leaving the judge furious.
Faux “heiress” Anna Sorokin threw yet another fashion hissy fit on Wednesday — again refusing to enter court because the clothes she was given were not up to her standards.
“I told you previously we were not holding up this trial any more over your fashion,” Justice Diane Kiesel reprimanded Sorokin, 28, when the alleged grifter emerged from the holding cell, wearing a wrinkled white button-down and slacks, The New York Post reported.
“I’ve had a jury here since 9.30am this morning. This is unacceptable and inappropriate … this is not a fashion show!”
After the judge’s stern words, Sorokin burst into tears and had an animated conversation with her lawyer, Todd Spodek, who tried to comfort her before the jury entered the room.
The clothing debacle, the third wardrobe mishap in two weeks, began after Mr Spodek delivered a bag of relatively low-cost Ann Taylor outfits to Sorokin.
The accused swindler had previously appeared in court in top labels, including Miu Miu and Yves Saint Laurent curated by her celebrity stylist, Anastasia Walker.
Wednesday’s Ann Taylor pieces included a thick, polyester-blend, baby-blue dress that fell below the knees.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether these outfits, which struck a conservative tone, were provided by Ms Walker, who didn’t return a request for comment.
On the eve of jury selection last week, the proceedings were delayed after Sorokin’s designer ensemble failed to arrive at Rikers Island, and her lawyers had to cobble together an outfit from H&M.
Sorokin suffered another wardrobe failure last Friday when she burst into tears and refused to attend her own trial after a snafu with the pieces provided by Ms Walker.
Prosecutors say Sorokin posed as a German heiress with a $US60 million fortune ($A84 million) to rip off $US275,000 ($A386,000) from businesses and friends so she could live an extravagant lifestyle.
She’s also charged with lying to try to nab a $22 million ($A31 million) loan to start a private Manhattan club for the city’s elite.
At trial on Wednesday, NYPD officer Bernice Pacheco testified she arrested Sorokin at the Le Parker Meridien hotel on July 26, 2017 on a theft-of-services rap.
The hotel called 911 after Sorokin allegedly refused to pay her tab.
“She just kept saying we’re making a big deal about it, we need to leave,” Pacheco told the jury. Sorokin insisted that her aunt was on her way and would pay the bill.
