Woman’s ‘fluke’ $30 Bunnings buy is ‘rare item worth $1200’
A woman had no idea her $30 buy at Bunnings is in fact a “super rare” item worth $1200 after she nabbed it by “fluke”.
A Bunnings shopper has had a stroke of good luck after she nabbed a $30 item that happens to be a “super rare” plant worth more than $1000.
Plant enthusiast Elsie Bishop, from Melbourne, had shared her bargain Bunnings buy on TikTok, after she discovered her Monstera was a rare species.
The 22-year-old spotted variegated markings on the leaves which is a rare genetic deformity plant lovers pay upwards of $1500 to have in their collections.
“When your $30 Bunnings monstera turns out to be a super rare $1200 plant,” she said in her clip.
Elise, who recently opened plant store, Green Envy, told viewers she was able to tell by the coloured spots on the leaves which are variegation.
“You know it’s stable when the coloured streaks are going up the stem as well,” she added.
Elise said it was hidden among the normal monsteras which is a strain of the popular house plant scarcely found in Australia that boasts unique white stripes and markings on the leaves.
“It’s a genetic deformity that can naturally occur so the growers must not have noticed,” she told a viewer.
She explained the small leaves will stay the same, however the plant should continue to grow more leaves with spots on them.
“This is called variegation and is rare,” Elise added.
She said it was “such a fluke”, as she didn’t even notice until she got home.
The plant lover said she recently sold a bigger variegated Monstera for $1500 but plans on keeping her latest buy as part of her personal collection.
Elise’ clip has attracted almost 200,000 views and hundreds of comments from impressed plant enthusiasts.
“Ohh so I’m going to Bunnings this weekend,” one excited viewer wrote.
“The dream,” another simply said.
One person said they too got “lucky” with their $14 Bunnings Monstera.
“It isn’t rare but it’s hatching out a ridiculous amount of leaves I need to start selling them,” they wrote.
