The Block: Guest bedroom room reveals

The Block room reveals were an obvious fail, with most couples struggling to finish their guest bedrooms. But one couple really “hated” theirs.

After days of chaos, mess and plenty of dust, the final result for this year’s first room challenge was not what any of the teams expected — an unfinished result.

Describing it as a big week was definitely an understatement — even host Scott Cam admitted he may have gone a bit too far with his first challenge of the year.

Ultimately, he was right, with some couples failing to complete their guest bedrooms within the time frame of just four days.

This year the contestants have undoubtedly felt the pressure of the sheer scale of the former seedy hostel, The Oslo.

Of the three rooms that were judged in tonight’s reveal, one couple managed to impress all three judges with their “incredible” design, while another couple failed to find anything positive to say about their own reveal.

When a producer asked how Cairns contestant Tess would describe her guest bedroom to her mother, she responded, “I wouldn’t tell her, I’ll say I don’t want to talk about it … hate it.”

But what did the judges think? See below.

HOUSE 1: Mitch and Mark

The Bondi boys were the only couple in tonight’s show to finish the challenge and impress the judges with their glamorous room which featured bold green, blue and brown colours, artwork and plenty of gold trim.

“The guys have given it an incredible sense of luxury. It’s got glamour, size and scale,” Neale Whitaker said.

“This is pretty impressive. I am loving all the details added throughout (beading on the walls),” Shaynna Blaze added.

Darren Palmer described the style as “fun, quirky and all on-trend”.

“It’s stuff they’re familiar with in terms of where trends are heading this year, which is all about colour,” he said.

It appears the boys’ experience in renovating 14 homes before entering The Block has somewhat paid off.

However, Shaynna pointed out that their expensive taste may prove to be a problem.

“Unfortunately, they’re going to run out of money, as their personality is not going to be able to run through the place.”

Despite that comment and Neale saying there’s “too many heroes” in the room, all three judges agreed Mark and Mitch were “right on track”.

HOUSE 2: Tess and Luke

Tess really struggled to find anything positive to say about her and Luke’s guest bedroom — they just hoped the judges could see where they were going with their style.

And lucky for them, they did — except Shaynna.

Darren loved their colour palette, art and layout, with the newlyweds going for a “young vibe” but Shaynna was “underwhelmed”.

“This is what I do not want to see this year. I feel like I’ve seen it the past three years, and what I just said in the other room is we want to see personality,” she said.

“We want to talk to the high-end money and this does not. Take some risks.”

Unfortunately for Tess and Luke, that doesn’t include using lots of different design styles, from modern shaker cupboards, a provincial style mantel, an Edwardian ceiling rose and cornices that are either federation or deco.

“There’s eclectic then mixing the wrong styles,” she said. “We don’t mix more than two traditional styles together,” Shayna warned.

But Neale was on the Cairn’s couple’s side, and visualising what the room could look like, said it would be an elegant and successful room.

The only feature Tess and Luke liked about their room was the bed.

HOUSE 3: Andy and Deb

These two have gone for a simple design but with a luxury finish.

And while it was another “unfinished symphony” with unpainted walls, the judges felt a “young beachy vibe”, and hoped it wasn’t going in that direction.

Darren loved the wooden floor, rug colour palettes and art choices, and the massive bed.

But for Neale, the style was “predictable”.

“This is a very young, very beachy, very Australian vibe, all perfectly legit in a different house and location,” Neale said.

Shaynna said they needed to amp it up and change direction.

“If you’re going to do that glamour, have beautiful muslin hangings, have drapery and something quite romantic,” she said.

However, they did like some of the quirky ornaments around the room. Picture: The Block

However, Neale pointed out that before the NSW couple think it’s all a disaster, “it’s absolutely not”.

He said they just needed style it differently.

The final two rooms will be revealed in tomorrow night’s episode along with the scores and the winner of the guest bedroom challenge.

The Block airs at 7pm on Channel Nine.
