‘Sold out’: Frenzy for $29 Kmart ‘dupe’ of $200 designer item
Shoppers have snapped up stock nationwide of an item that many claimed is identical to a cult Australian product that’s much more “expensive”.
Shoppers are raving about a new Kmart product that many have claimed is the spitting image of an expensive homewares item – but it costs $170 less.
The budget retailer recently released its Anko Rowan Table Lamp, with consumers quickly comparing it to a similar product from designer Australian brand, Paola and Joy.
But while the cult Cora Table Lamp, famed for its signature wavy stand, retails for $199, Kmart’s product is priced at just $29, a detail that has proved very alluring to shoppers.
Just two weeks after hitting shelves, stock across the country has “sold out”, though Kmart told news.com.au more would be available in stores “soon”.
In the meantime, those who have managed to snag the homewares item have been sharing videos of the product in action.
“Love a good home find that doesn’t break the bank or our budget,” one shopper wrote.
Some have even been flexing their DIY skills, revealing tricks they’d used to match transform the cream stand into a colour that matches their home decor.
“Turn this basic Anko table lamp into these beautiful side lamps,” TikTok user @jimjamskitchen shared.
He then proceeded to detail how he spray painted the base black using just a single can of paint and “a lot of patience”.
“That looks elite,” one commented, as another declared: “This is gorgeous!”
On another video of an Aussie “flipping” the colour of the lamp, one user asked what paint they used, with the DIY-er replying: “Satin black with Dulux spray paint.”
The hugely popular product hit stores in May, with Kmart stating that “due to its popularity, sold out within two weeks”.
“We strive to provide our customers with incredible looks and lighting options at an affordable price,” the spokesperson said.
“We want to offer customers functional and decorative pieces that don’t break the bank. The wave has been a key trend throughout the season, and this design taps into this aesthetic while laying over natural tones we know our customers love.”
Bunnings ‘dupe’ of cult-Aussie item
For those that missed out and are keen to get their hands on it, Kmart said “the Rowan Lamp will be back in stock late August, so keep your eyes peeled”.
However, some nifty fans of the popular Paola and Joy lamp have spotted Kmart isn’t the only store selling a “dupe”, with Bunnings also offering something similar.
“I was going to gate keep, but I won’t,” TikTok user @brittanyangell_ said in a recent video.
“These are the Paola and Joy Cora lamps, they’re currently on sale, but they’re still so expensive.
“I found a dupe for $85 at Bunnings. Are you kidding?”
The product doesn’t have the wavy stand, but it has a similar lamp shade to the designer version, a detail not featured in Kmart’s offering.
“I’m so freaking excited,” she said, revealing in a later video how she set up the Onda Table Lamp, made by Home Design.
“OMG Bunnings slay,” one person replied.
“It’s so cute,” another said.
It’s not the first time Kmart shoppers have spotted a “dupe” of a designer lamp, with many going crazy for the Anko Gigi Floor Lamp, which was released in February.
The gold and cream homewares item was quickly compared to the Mads Caprani Floor Light from Replica Furniture that retails for $495.
One shopper described it as “gorgeous”, as another declared: “Chef’s kiss Kmart.”
