A picture of a “bizarre” house detail has sparked mystery online.

People have been left scratching their heads after a confused renter shared a snap of an item in their new house.

The poster stated that they had “absolutely no idea” what the contraption was for, and asked for help in trying to figure out the item’s purpose.

Many were quick to offer their theories on what they believed the item could possibly be.

“I just moved into a new place and have this stuck to the bottom of the cupboard,” the woman, from Brisbane, asked the group.

“Does anyone know what this could be?”

She shared a picture of the object next to her post, which baffled many online.

“I’ve never see anything like that in my life!” one commented.

“How bizarre. It looks dangerous.”

“It looks a like part of the turning shelf like a lazy Susan,” a Facebook user suggested.

“Perhaps the rest went elsewhere?”

“It is for sure a part of another item,” agreed another.

“Maybe it’s a spare part for something that chops veggies.”

Although it was difficult for some to figure out, others managed to solve the mystery – the item is actually a jar opener.

“I’ve got one and works really well,” one said.

“It is the best thing ever!”

The jar opener can grab ahold of any lid of a jar or bottle when wedged between two angled sides.

The blades provide grip and a simple twist will release the lid.

They are often used by people with mobility issues, arthritis, or weak hands, and are designed to be fitted to the bottom of a kitchen cabinet to save benchspace.

This is not the first time people have taken to social media after spotting something odd in their home.

Earlier this year, a woman took to Facebook after this unusual shower fitting found in her bathroom left her stumped.

She posted the snap to an online group in the hopes that someone could help figure out what the purpose of this mysterious shower item.

“We moved in recently, and I can’t work out what this is in the shower?” she posted.

“Both showers have it – any idea?

“It slopes down, it doesn’t really hold a soap bar.”

Some people in the comments were also confused by the ceramic shower item, with many saying they had never seen anything like it before.

“It looks like a soap holder that has been installed upside down, very odd” one person suggested.

“Yes, I think it’s a soap holder that’s been put in the wrong way” agreed another.

Despite the speculation, there was no concrete answer.

But after researching more into the product, it was discovered that the mystery item was actually a foot rest, which would come in handy when shaving your legs.

Speaking to a distributer of the product, news.com.au found out that while these installations were once very popular, interest in them died down significantly after the 1990s.

“That looks to me like a ceramic foot rest, quite common throughout the 70s-90s a bit less popular today” a spokesperson for Beaumont Tiles said.

“They are designed for those shaving their legs to prop their foot on for stability and balance so they don’t slip while shaving.”

After uncovering what the shower item did, many Facebook users in the comments were amazed at the discovery.

“Wow, amazing and so random to have!” the original poster said.

“This was all the rage in the 1990s” another pointed out.

Others joked that there could other uses for the foot rest besides shaving your legs.

“It’s to make ‘coupling’ easier in the shower” one said.

“It’s there to help you have some fun shower time” another commented.
