Influencers slammed for cleaning hack

There isn’t a shortage of cleaning hacks on the internet, with one in particular involving a toilet seat has left social media users less than impressed.

American influencers Janelle Flom and Kate Heintzelman took to Instagram to post a clip of their “hack”.

The hack involved removing a toilet seat and popping it in the dishwasher to clean it.

Social media was left less than impressed with the hacking, slamming it as “nasty”.

“This is why we shouldn’t be eating at other people’s houses,” one social media user commented on the clip.

Another added: “That’s disgusting. I keep waiting for it to say this is just a joke.”

One said: “Uhhh NO! That’s ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING! It’s the fact that they put it in there with dishes is exactly one of the reasons why we have all of these viruses and ‘superbugs’ because some people are just plain NASTY!”

A fourth added: “No no that’s not a clean hack that’s just a nasty hack, Clean hack would be if you spray it down with some Clorox bleach and clean it right where it belong in the bathroom on the toilet.”

In 2019, consumer group Choice Australia, created a complete list of what can and can’t go into the dishwasher.

Plastics, which toilet seats are often made of, are a case-by-case basis when it comes to the dishwasher.

“A hot dishwasher can warp or damage some plastics, and squeezing plastic items into small spaces may also cause warping – so while you can put them in the dishwasher, they should go on the top shelf,” the Choice website explained.

“Plastics also have a low thermal mass, so they don’t dry especially well in your dishwasher.”

It also added that contaminants – such as wax, cigarette ash, poisons, mineral oils, wet paints and oiled tools – should never go in the dishwasher.
