A mother has impressed on TikTok with her creative take on a $29 Kmart item, changing it from “tacky” to “really beautiful”.

Mum's take on 'tacky' Kmart product

An Aussie mum has gone viral after creating a clever hack for a decking tile from Kmart.

TikTok user @sammy.see took to social media to share her tip for using tiles that come in a pack of four for $29.

“I’ve looked at these Kmart tiles for ages and I feel like they’re tacky,” she said in the video. “But I feel like they’re tacky if you lay them wrong.”

While the tiles are square, Sammy See suggested cutting them up and trimming around the edges to make a “really beautiful tile”.

She added that the back needed to be removed in order for the hack to be successful.

Sammy said the tiles are initially light but once they’re grouted they “come up a treat”, adding that the product was still user-friendly with her three-year-old helping her.

Social media users fawned over the DIY project.

“No idea why everyone is hating, I think they look great,” one social media user commented.

Another said: “Thank you so much for this I nearly took mine back because they looked so light compared to vids online. Great tip to cut the frame too.”

“You did an amazing job reminds me in early 2000 designs I love it and miss it,” another said.

One added: “Perfect! I was going to suggest exactly what you did! This should be done with any pre-done rock tiles like this. Looks great!”

A spokesperson from the department store said it was impressed by how customers were taking charge on the designs.

Kmart buyer Sarah Dummett told news.com.au: “The Kmart stone decking tiles are inspired by the trend of natural finishes and textured surfaces, and are a fantastic option for upgrading both indoor and outdoor spaces around the home.

“We knew our community would get creative with this product, however they have shown us that the possibilities are endless.

“The Kmart Team loves to see our community express themselves creatively through our DIY range and we look forward to continuing to see the unique ways the stone decking tiles are brought to life.”
