Kmart fan favourite $179 egg chair back in stock online only

It hit stores for just four days last year, but now a popular product is back in stock – but there’s a catch some aren’t happy about.

5 game-changing Kmart hacks

If you didn’t manage to buy Kmart’s egg chair last year then you’re probably among the majority of shoppers.

The $179 item, which is a much cheaper dupe of more expensive versions on the market, appeared in the discount department store for just four days last year.

It was one of a handful of exclusive products Kmart sold as part of its Black Friday range in late November.

Kmart has stocked egg chair variations over the year only for all of them to sell “like hot cakes”.

But now there’s good news for those who missed out, with Kmart bringing the sought-after item back – however, there is a catch.

The egg chair will only be sold online in NSW, Victoria and Queensland and will not be available in stores or for click and collect purchases.

Kmart warned stock was limited” and “once it’s gone, it’s gone!”

The move left some customers disappointed that the product was ineligible for free delivery, with the fee instead calculated based on address and how bulky the item was.

Posting in the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia page, shoppers revealed they would be charged up to $94 just to have the egg chair shipped to them.

Some people revealed their shipper was more than half the cost of the chair.
Some people revealed their shipper was more than half the cost of the chair.

“I really want to purchase this chair but the postage has me thinking twice,” one person wrote, while another added: “If the postage wasn’t so high it would be great.”

“Damn … you could probably spend the same and get a better quality one online with free delivery!” one person commented.

But others didn’t seem to mind the extra postage cost and purchased the item, warning others to do the same unless they wanted to miss out on the cult Kmart item.

“My postage was $55 which isn’t too bad would nearly cost me that to drive to Kmart and back … so YOLO I bought one hehe,” one shopper wrote, while another added: “I want one so bad.”

“Finally!!!! They stocked a free standing egg chair that sold like hot cakes a few years ago and never did it again,” another said.

KMART APOLOGISES FOR EMPTY SHELVES

The new product comes as Kmart’s boss last week apologised for the lack of stock in stores, explaining that the store had struggled to keep up with demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

For weeks Kmart has faced complaints of empty shelves, with frustrated customers unable to get their hands on popular products such as exercise equipment and kitchenware.

It faced shortages when countries Kmart manufactures in halted production, with the retail chain now expecting store stock levels to return to normal by the end of July.

In an email sent to customers, Kmart retail director John Gualtieri revealed the company had halted the ordering of certain stock into stores.

“During the early stages of COVID-19, demand for much of our loved product softened; as a result, we made a decision to pause inventory shipments,” he said.

A fresh delivery of nursery items are expected at the end of this month, while home office, kitchen and dining products will be back in stock by mid-July.

New furniture and accessories will arrive in store by mid to late-July, while bikes and exercise equipment is due at the end of July.
