Dyson unveils its first personal purified air treatment device

Fans of Dyson, prepare your wallets. Its latest “intelligent” cleaner is one you’ll definitely want, but didn’t even realise you needed.

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Dyson is its ever-so-popular vacuums.

The brand launched the latest “intelligent” V11 vacuum only five months ago and there are also hair and lighting products in its family as well as hand dryers.

But the company is not done yet, with a new device it believes will blow the minds of hardcore Dyson lovers — a “personalised” purifying fan.

Shoppers won’t all receive a product that has been made unique to them. The personalisation comes from the fact this is a fan for just you — rather than the brand’s purifying range which solves “full-room needs”.

Instead the Dyson Pure Cool Me allows buyers to “take control” of their own air quality that purifies the air directly around them.

“We have our purifying range already which solves the full-room needs. But we got a lot of feedback from customers who wanted that personal touch. They wanted to take control of their own area,” Tom Mogridge, senior engineer of environmental control at Dyson, told news.com.au.

“Especially in an office environment where you don’t have control over the whole environment, it’s not your responsibility to make sure the air quality is perfect, but we realised there is another way to take control of the air that you are breathing.”

Mr Mogridge said the product was also handy for those suffering from allergies.

“If you’re particularly sensitive to dust and have allergies, you get that high quality of dust filtrations — you’re getting that direct column of clean air washing over you, and you can really feel the air that you’re breathing is that cleaner air compared to what may be around you.”

It’s one of those things you never thought you needed until you realise humans consume about 9000 litres of air a day.

It took Dyson engineers 366 mechanical strength tests to get the product right — this included dropping it on the floor and kicking it, because … these things happen.

2022 prototypes of the machine were also developed.

WHAT MAKES IT SO GOOD?

The dome-shaped fan is a combination of Dyson’s knowledge of science and technology.

Its engineers discovered that when two jets of air meet on a convex surface they converge to create a high-pressure core and a focused stream of air.

In other words, they found a way to create a compact product that revolutionises the way cleaner air is delivered to you.

According to Dyson, its HEPA filter captures 99.95 per cent of particle pollutants such as pollen, mould, grease and bacteria.

“The HEPA filter will trap even the smallest of particles, down to 0.1 microns. For reference,

that is 300 times narrower than a human hair,” Mr Mogridge said.

Apart from the office, Dyson recommend using it in bedrooms where people spend about one third of their lives.

While most fans tend to give off a loud noise, which is the last thing you want when trying to get a good night’s sleep, Mr Mogridge says you will barely know the new Dyson fan is in the room.

“To make sure it is pleasant to use in close proximity, our acoustic engineers have conducted more than 1000 tests in Dyson’s semi-anechoic chamber, measuring both sound volume and sound quality — and they test this when only 20cm from the machine,” he said.

The product also has an “intelligent light sensing system” so it automatically dims or brightens in real time and can be set to turn off.

COST AND KEY FEATURES

The Dyson Pure Cool Me will set you back $499, but Mr Mogridge said it was a one-off investment for your wellbeing.

“It’s a product that’s going to benefit you over a long period of time,” he said.

“Air quality is something that does not affect us instantaneously, although it does for allergies, but long-term exposure to air quality is what really impacts you.”

Replacing the filter will cost you $99 each time — it can last up to one year if you use it about eight hours a day.

Range: It’s available in a white/silver colour and gunmetal/copper colour.

Sleep timer: At night, you can set the sleep timer to anywhere between 30 minutes and eight hours.

70-degree oscillation: It can rotate from side to side to deliver airflow through a 70-degree range.

The Dyson Pure Cool Me will be available from September 6 online at the Dyson store.
