‘Gross’ fact about washing machines ‘surprises’ mums

How do you clean your washer? The answer has shocked, with some admitting they “no idea” the appliance hid a “disgusting” truth.

A group of savvy mums raving about a product they use to restore their filthy washing machines have shocked those who didn’t realise the appliance needed cleaning.

Conversation in the Facebook group Mums Who Clean began when several Aussie women revealed they turned to a $6 Pine O Cleen product to remove a build-up of “gunk” in the drum and filters of their washers.

But while some proudly showed off their impressive results, others were horrified to learn fabric softener and powder created a “disgusting sludge”, revealing it had never occurred to them to clean the inside.

“I can’t believe how much build up it creates, so yuck. I had no idea,” one woman wrote.

Another – who shared a series of photos after seeing others rave about the cleaner – said she was “quite surprised” at how filthy her machine was.

“Did the whole ‘meh, I’ll give it a go because it’s on special at Woolies’. I’m quite surprised,” she captioned her post.

“The water was gross. This is the first five minutes of a wash (empty machine on hot wash).”

Another woman posted separately, asking why her clothes were coming out of the washer with “marks”, calling on advice to help get the stains out.

“You need to clean your machine,” one said. “Sounds like there’s a build up inside.”

The admission prompted others to share how they get success.

“I clean my machine once a month, filter every wash and I have seen it get out this much built-up gunk,” one woman said.

Another user was sceptical machines were really that “gross” – until she decided to give it a go herself.

“Saw a post about this earlier in the week and thought I’d give it a go. “WOW!

“Water was filthy (final deep rinse and water clean and clear). Great product – about $5 – cleans, deodorises and smells so lovely.”

The Pine O Cleen product so many of the users recommended is an antibacterial washing machine cleaner specially designed to remove hidden dirt as well as assist in removing limescale.

Others also swore by mixing ½ cup bicarbonate (bicarb) soda with two cups of white vinegar and running it through an empty washing cycle.
