A woman’s “genius” Kmart hack has gone viral, after she transformed two $19 bread bins from the retailer into a kitchen cabinet.

In a post on Facebook, Gold Coast mum-of-seven Joelle wrote she “had an old Kmart bread bin we no longer were using”. And so, she took to TikTok – where she was inspired to buy a second bin and join them together, resulting in “a cheap yet stylish kitchen cabinet”.

“I was inspired by this lady on TikTok; I saw her video and my brain started ticking away and I knew exactly how and where I wanted to put it,” she told Yahoo.

“I had an unused bread bin that was too pretty to get rid of. I knew there had to be a way to use it somehow, and then this was it.”

The original hack on TikTok turned the bread bins into bedside tables.

But “unlike the other hack”, Joelle explained, “which used glue and lots of attachments, I kept it super simple and attached them together only using four nuts and bolts”.

Joelle has used the resulting cabinet for medicine and batteries – keeping them far away from young, prying hands.

Her post has drummed up hundreds of likes, with Facebook members describing the cabinet as “retro inspired, I totally love it”.

“Legit genius. This is a great idea in a corner, too. Maybe above a desk,” another commented.

“Oh my gosh … You are a lil genius. This is totally what this group is about,” added a third person.

“How innovative and fantastic. Well done.”

So popular was Joelle’s idea that Kmart’s bamboo bread bins are now sold out online.
