Woman’s 30-minute Bunnings desk goes viral on TikTok
A Melbourne woman, together with her tradie boyfriend, have had their simple Bunnings hack go viral moments after sharing it on TikTok.
A Melbourne woman was shocked to learn her simple Bunnings hack had gone viral just one day after sharing the post.
Georgia Burrows was on the hunt for a desk for her at-home office, but after coming across some very expensive alternatives, the 24-year-old decided to make one herself.
With the help of her tradie boyfriend Tim, 26, the duo headed to Bunnings and managed to nab everything they needed for under $250.
“We got the Spotted Gum timber, metal legs and screws all for $234,” Georgia told news.com.au.
“When we got home we measured how far off we wanted the legs from the side of the desk and just screwed them in.
“After that we took it outside to sand until it was completely smooth, as it was quite rough.”
Georgia said the simple “hack” took them no longer than 30 minutes to complete and was quite impressed at how affordable it turned out.
“We even looked at places like Fantastic Furniture and this is such good value for money as the quality is a lot better – this [desktop] is real timber.”
She decided to record it and after some convincing from her sister, uploaded it to TikTok to see if it would get any traction.
“I put it up on a Sunday and woke up the next morning and I was like ‘Oh my God’, it had just gone crazy,” she said.
The video, which shows the couple buying the material from the hardware store and then building it, has since been viewed more than half a million times.
“I was not expecting that at all – not over a desk,” she said.
“But people obviously love DIY stuff.”
Due to the huge response and some people asking for a breakdown of how much it all cost, Georgia then filmed a follow-up clip.
In it she revealed the timber was $144 (for a piece 210cm x 60cm), and black metal legs were $42 each, adding you can get a bunch of different sizes and types of both timber and legs.
“The timber was $144, but as you can see it’s quite big. The screws we used were $6.25 for a packet of 50, and we only needed eight in the end,” she said in the clip.
“So, the total was $234.50 which we thought was pretty good because it’s real timber – we saw laminate ones for around $300.”
Some TikTok users were so impressed they set out to buy the exact same materials.
“Literally sitting in the Bunnings carpark waiting for the hubby to get all these parts,” one woman commented.

“Looks amazing and like you said it’s real wood, not some cheap laminate,” said another in response to others who thought it was “too expensive”.
Georgia, who owns a reusable beauty brand with her sister, shared another post, this time of her laundry decked with about $3000 worth of Bunnings items – and that too has gone viral with more than half a million views.
It shows before and after footage, with products including a laundry top similar to that of her desk, Bunnings cupboards, towel rack and sink.
