Mum shares $19 Kmart ottomans dining room table hack
A savvy mum who refused to pay $5000 for a dining table has revealed how she made her own using affordable items from Kmart and Bunnings.
An Aussie mum has left Facebook users shocked after she managed to transform a second hand item into a “stunning” dining table.
The woman from Macedon in Victoria, took to the popular Bunnings Mum Australia page to reveal her affordable transformation.
She explained that she found a table on Facebook marketplace for $40, nabbed some ripped sheets of plywood from Bunnings and used four ribbed Ottomans from Kmart ($19 each) for the legs.
“I turned a $40 marketplace find into this,” she captioned several before and after snaps.
“Ripped sheets of plywood from Bunnings into pieces and made the pattern up as I went. “Googled how to bend wood trim for the ends and then Whitewashed the entire top and coated with a satin, water based clear.”
She added that for the ends, she wet the wood trim, and bent it to an arch using the gaps in her decking boards to hold it in place.
“It will bend back a little but will mostly hold its shape when dry. Then I used glue and a nail gun.”
The mum also explained that she cut down the ottomans slightly and stacked them with a timber frame inside each, to help keep the table sturdy.
She wanted the table to be longer so she added another section then fixed everything in place before attaching the timber on top.
“I saw a table that looked similar with a $5,000 price tag and that’s just not me,” the mum said.
“When I saw the ottomans I knew I could use them as legs and then it was just a matter of finding a table the shape I wanted which was a lot harder than I thought it would be.”
To attach the ply to the original table top the mum said she used liquid nails to glue the majority of pieces down.
“In some sections like in the centre, where underneath it had the gaps from the extension I used my nail gun with short nails.”
Since sharing her hack on Tuesday, it has been ‘liked’ 3,300 times with hundreds of comments from users describing it as “epic”, “clever” and the “best hack” they have ever seen
“This looks amazing!!!! Well done, ” one woman wrote.
“Wow what a difference, looks beautiful!!” said another, while a third added: “I’m blown away! This is spectacular. just WOW!”
Others said her post has helped inspire them transform their own dining tables.
“I have been considering doing something similar to this as a splashback, you’ve inspired me to take the plunge,” one Facebook user said.
“Oh my goodness! This is exactly our table. It was my Nannas and I so desperately want to keep it but it doesn’t suit our house. This is a great idea!” added another.
The mum was blown away by all the positive feedback, taking to the comments section to thank everyone for their kind words.
“Thanks so much for all of the amazing comments everyone.”
