Couple’s $50k find under carpet while renovating
A couple were left stunned when they made a valuable discovery after lifting up the carpet during a home renovation.
A couple has made an astonishing – and valuable – discovery while renovating their home.
Josh and Emily, both aged in their 30s, shared their surprise at the find on TikTok, where they frequently post footage of their renovation journey.
They “struck gold” after ripping up a carpet in their Walthamstow, East London house, which was dirty and old. Underneath was an incredibly lucky sight – a wooden “diamond parquet” floor which was popular in the 17th century.
Even better, it was in great condition.
Video of the moment the couple realised what they had uncovered reveals their sheer excitement and has attracted more than 3 million views, sending many commenters into a frenzy.
“Oh my gosh – Josh, Josh, Josh! It’s a diamond parquet,” Emily exclaimed as Josh removed the top layers of flooring.
The floor, which stretches from the hallway into the lounge, could be worth almost $50,000, according to a flooring specialist.
“We saw it was parquet in the corners but this was the first time we pulled it all the way to reveal it was diamond,” Josh explained.
The couple said the floor had been hidden underneath the carpet for approximately 30 years.
“We’d seen a tiny corner when we visited the house but when we found out it was diamond parquet in perfect condition we were blown away,” Josh told media in the UK.
“We had a flooring specialist come round to have a look and told us it’s some of the best type of oak he’s seen and in excellent condition.”
“Given the floor space it covers we are looking at [a worth of] maybe £20,000-25,000 ($38,000-$48,500).
“We are going to keep it and do a fine sand throughout then finish with either a varnish or stain.”
Many commenters seemed just as excited as the London couple at the find.
“Did you scream when you saw those floors?! I would’ve been screaming!”, one thrilled TikTok viewer wrote.
“You won the lottery with those floors,” another commented.
