Woman learns she has two vaginas while giving birth

US woman Brittany Jacobs was 30 hours into labour when a nurse looked between her legs and made a surprising discovery.

Woman discovers she has two vaginas

A US mum has revealed how she discovered she had two vaginas at the age of 25 while 30 hours into giving birth to her first son.

Brittany Jacobs had always experienced pain while on her period or having sex, but never knew why, despite having Pap smears and other tests done.

In a TikTok video that’s been viewed more than 2.7 million times, Ms Jacobs said: “I’ve always considered myself to have a really high pain tolerance but my periods were so bad I would cry, I always bled out of my tampons.”

Ms Jacobs said she would get “two separate periods” every month and sex was always “really painful”.

When she fell pregnant, Ms Jacobs said she “only carried on one side” but it was only when she was hours into labour that her nurse made a stunning discovery.

“The nurse looks down and she says, ‘Oh honey, you have two vaginas, two cervixes and two uteruses,’” Ms Jacobs said.

“And for 25 years no-one noticed.”

Uterine didelphys is a rare congenital deformity which occurs when the female foetus is developing in the womb.

In normal foetus development the uterus starts out as two small tubes that eventually fuse together, but when uterine didelphys happens the two tubes will stay separate.

This leads to the foetus developing two uteruses and, in some cases, two separate vaginal canals.

In a series of follow-up videos Ms Jacobs explained that while she had one opening, inside there was a septum “like the septum in your nose” that created two vaginal canals which led to separate cervixes and uteruses.

“(The septum) separates the vaginal canals into one and two but it’s like an inch or two up inside the one exterior hole,” Ms Jacobs said.

“I always thought it was a hymen and I guess that’s what my husband assumed it was too. “And when we discovered he was deployed and he was on Skype and he was like, ‘Oh that makes a lot of sense, sex with you is really painful for me too.’”

Ms Jacobs said she went through a “long labour” with her first son that was “very painful” because the septum separating her two vaginas was “blocking the head of my son”.

“He did not have enough room to come out,” she said.

While her doctor wanted her to have a C-section Ms Jacobs opted instead to have the septum cut.

“The septum went all the way up so I had stitches all the way up once they cut it. My son came out and there was little scratches on his back from the stitches,” she said.

After having the septum cut Ms Jacobs “left it” and discovered it “solved a lot of problems” for her.

Ms Jacobs hasn’t had further tests done due to the coronavirus pandemic and became pregnant with her second child soon after her first so doesn’t know if she will still have two periods.

“I’ve been pregnant for basically two years and it was both on the same side, so I have no idea if my other side is fertile or not,” she said.
