Aussie model's shares sun-safety warning after 'concerning' freckle removed

An Australian model has shared an important sun-safety message with followers after having a “concerning” freckle removed from her foot.

Dominique Elissa, 26, had a “tiny” brown spot cut out of her skin on the base of her foot recently after a doctor identified it as possible skin cancer.

While she’s still waiting for the results of the biopsy, the Sydney-based model opened up about her experience, explaining hands and feet are the most common areas missed during sunscreen application.

“So I put on my Instagram Story that I can’t train strenuously for the next three weeks … the reason for this is that about two weeks ago I got my skin checked and they checked all my spots,” she explained.

“They were all fine and then there was the tiniest one under my foot.

“Honestly it was the size of a little freckle like that [points to mole on her forearm] and it was of concern.”

After having it removed, Dominique said she was unable to walk properly and was banned from the gym for three weeks.

“Yes, it’s an inconvenience for me, however, I’m so grateful that I caught it early and I’ll get my results in a week,” she said.

“I just wanted to say, go and get your skin checked. Wear sunscreen on your hands and under your feet.

“Just be careful in the sun because it’s not worth it at the end of the day.”

The video, shared from inside her car, also had font written over the top with a message that stressed how important it was to wear SPF on your hands and feed.

“This is the most common place for skin cancer,” she wrote.

In a separate post, the young woman shared a bikini photo taken at the bach with the caption: “GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED.”

“I love the feeling of the sun on my skin, but after recently having to get a mole removed from under my foot, I definitely look at it differently,” she continued.

“Spread the word because that could save someone’s life.”

Many thanked the young model for sharing her experience, writing it was an “important message”.

“Stunning Dominique, I know I’ve had many skin cancers removed and a melanoma as well, so this is an important message,” one wrote.

“Especially in Australia, sun is so strong,” another agreed.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with statistics showing two in three Australians will be diagnosed with the condition by the age of 70.

Skin cancers most often develop on skin areas typically exposed to the sun, especially the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders and back, experts state.
