Coronavirus: More than 100 council areas across Australia without any virus cases

There are more than 100 council areas across Australia without any cases of coronavirus and locals are determined it stays that way.

Easter long weekend: can I still go on holiday?

More than 100 Australian council areas have had no recorded cases of coronavirus as authorities continue to urge Australians not to become complacent about the spread of the virus.

It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison, health authorities and state premiers urged everyone to stay home this Easter, to prevent the spread of the virus in largely unaffected rural and remote parts of the country.

More than 135 regions and local government areas in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia have had no COVID-19 cases, The Australian first reported.

Most of the COVID-19 free zones are small regional towns and the bulk are in heavily locked-down Western Australia.

Mr Morrison said on Thursday that staying home this Easter would help save these regional towns from infection.

“The coronavirus means this Easter will be different and we will be staying at home,” Mr Morrison said.

“And it’s important because we cannot undo the tremendous progress we have made together in recent times.

“So this Easter we are staying at home. Don’t travel. Don’t go away.”

Photos have emerged all over the country of local townships discouraging people from visiting.

In the northwestern corner of NSW, small towns such as Narrabri, Cobar, Brewarrina and Ivanhoe, and Wilcannia in the Central Darling area have reported no cases of the disease.

The southwest of NSW has also been spared so far, with areas such as Coolamon and Bland reporting no cases.

Only eight council areas in Victoria have no cases of coronavirus, including the alpine region, the northeastern historical town of Beechworth and southern coastal towns such as Apollo Bay and Colac.

Most of the unaffected areas are in the northwest along the South Australian border.

In Queensland, the north has been largely protected from coronavirus. The Torres Strait Islands and Cape York are reporting no cases.

Queensland towns such as Mount Isa in the northwest, St George in the south, and Barcaldine in the centre are also reporting no COVID-19 cases.

Western Australia has 76 local government areas reporting no coronavirus cases. It’s a sign that Premier Mark McGowan’s decision to clamp down on travel between the different regions of his state, which was criticised at the time, appears to be working.

Popular holiday destinations in Western Australia such as Denmark, Monkey Mia and Esperance are reporting no cases as people from Perth are prevented from going to their holiday homes this Easter.

In South Australia — where 77 per cent of the state’s population is in Adelaide — towns in the Flinders Range and Franklin Harbour have reported no cases.
