Woman’s ‘genius’ hack to stop cut avocados turning brown
If you’re an avo lover who is fed up with seeing half-used avocados go to waste, you’re going to want this brilliant tip.
There aren’t many of us who can resist the allure of a versatile avocado.
From turning it into guacamole to topping it on your toast, a humble avo can do an impressive amount of things.
But despite our love for avos, the green fruit has one very annoying trait – how quickly it turns brown once sliced into.
So how do you get around this very Australian conundrum? After all, even next-level avo fans struggle to spread a whole one on their toast.
There’s no shortage of ideas to help save our favourite fruit from turning on us. Some use lettuce leaves to wrap it up, others cover it in cling film – or if you’re really fancy you splash out on one of those a nifty “huggers” to keep it from oxidising.
But one woman has gone viral after sharing her impressively simple – and also free – solution to our avocado woes.
TikTok user @kmag1 shared two videos showing off her “best hack ever”, stating all you needed was a plastic container and some water.

All she did was place the avo with its exposed flesh face down in the water, put on the container’s lid and pop it in the fridge.
But if you’re thinking, “surely that will leave it gross and soggy”, you’re not alone – which is why she shared a second video showing us what it looks like the next day.
“It’s been 24 hours and I just took it out of the fridge. It’s perfectly green but it is a little water logged. I just pat it dry and it gets all that off.”
She then showed the avo removed from its skin and it was truly a sight to behold. There wasn’t a smidgen of brown anywhere.
The impressive and extremely cost-effective method to keeping the fruit fresh has been met with a huge reaction, with the initial video receiving over 1200 comments to date.
Some branded the hot tip “genius” and a “total game-changer” – while one person said: “You just changed my life.”
But while @kmag1’s hot hack has gone viral, she’s explained in a separate video it isn’t a new trick – just one she found on Google.
“Seriously never knew that,” one person said.
“This is the only information I have ever needed,” another wrote.
One person declared: “Oh my gosh … you are the greatest contributor to TikTok!”
Some teased the best way to save an avo from turning is to eat it all, while another said the trick works even better with oil.
Earlier this year a New Zealand mum hit the headlines after revealing she used lettuce leaves to keep her avos as green as the day she bought it.
“Lettuce leaves, primarily the outer ones that are a bit harder, make for excellent food wrap,” she wrote on Facebook. “Since they’re designed for that purpose in the first place.”
Alongside her post she shared a picture of her plump, ripe avo that she said had been cut open for a whole week, leaving many minds blown.
