Shopper reveals meaning behind code on Aldi packaging
An eagle-eyed Aldi shopper has uncovered a code on the back of packaged goods that reveals information shoppers are desperate to know.
An eagle-eyed Aldi shopper has spotted a little known fact on the back of several supermarket goods.
Taking to the popular Facebook group Aldi Mums, the woman revealed an easy-to-miss code on the back of Aldi’s seafood products that provides information about which country and region the fish originated from.
Australian products are required to have location details on the packs, but the extra known detail allows customers to source even more information, something many Aussie shoppers have been keen to learn in a bid to support locally made produce.
All you have to do is flip your Aldi seafood item over and locate a number – then use those digits to look up the extra information.

“I know seafood gets a bad call out,” the shopper posted to the group.
“I just wanted to share something with you all that I learnt and hopefully it will solve all the ‘do you know where your fish comes from’ dramas.”
She went on to explain that each box has a “code” for the fish area/catchment area it is caught.
“You can then look it up to know which areas your fish has come from and what practices they use.”
Alongside her post, the shopper shared an image of her seafood buy, sharing its code “FAO 81”.
A google search reveals the catchment covers a significant part of the Southwest Pacific, including a section of Australia’s east coast, New Zealand’s entire coastline and waters to the right of New Zealand.
“Hope this helps everyone in the future,” she wrote.
Many of the Facebook members thanked the woman for sharing her handy tip.
“That’s great info! Thanks for sharing,” one person wrote.
“This is so helpful, thank you,” said another.
“Very useful information thanks for sharing,” a third commented, while a woman added, “Very interesting. I looked it up on Google. Great how it shows the world areas.”
The shopper went on to say that she understands the German supermarket chain is making “great progress to be sustainable, responsible and accountable”.
“Personally, I don’t buy non-Australian and was pleasantly surprised to see this info.”
Earlier this week, another eagled-eye shopper from Kmart also revealed the simple way you can find out when items will be restocked.
It comes at a time when the popular Aussie retailer has been facing a shortage of products due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Look for the letters EDD (estimated delivery date) and the date is next to it. I assume that they may do this on all out of stock items,” the Queensland mum explained in a Facebook post.
Many were blown away by the new information saying it will save them time, describing it as a “game-changer”.
“This is life-changing,” one person wrote.
“What an awesome tip for everyone!” added another, while a third said, “Kmart’s best kept secret!”
