World’s 50 Best Restaurants revealed in Melbourne

MELBOURNE’S Attica has been named Australasia’s best restaurant, with two Victorian establishments making the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for the first time. SEE THE TOP 50

FOR the fifth year running Attica in Melbourne has been named Australasia’s best restaurant in the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Attica, in Ripponlea, was named number 32 in the world at a gala ceremony held at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton.

Making its debut on the list, Dan Hunter’s Brae in Birregurra, was named number 44.

It’s the first time two Victorian restaurants have made the prestigious list.

Top spot was taken out by Eleven Madison Park in New York.

Second place was last year’s number one, Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana while El Cellar de can Roca in Girona, Spain, was named number three.

Led by chef-owner Ben Shewry, the menu at Attica draws heavily on native ingredients, many of which are grown at the nearby Ripponlea Estate.

Attica was up one spot from last year. Attica made its debut on the list in 2013 when it ranked 21.

Nahm in Bangkok, the flagship restaurant for Aussie expat David Thompson who has recently opened Long Chim in Melbourne, was ranked 28 while Australian chef Brett Graham’s London restaurant The Ledbury was 27, down from 14 last year.

The Ashley Palmer-Watts helmed original Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London was up nine places from last year, ranked 36.

Heston Blumenthal was given the Lifetime Achievement award.

The chefs’ choice award winner was Virgilio Martinez from Central in Lima, Peru, which was South America’s Best Restaurant ranked 5.

The award for the highest climber went to Dan Barber’s Blue Hill in upstate New York, at 11.

Gagan in Bangkok was named Best Restaurant in Asia and came in at number 7.
