Inside Aldi’s fancy pop up wine bar in Sydney

Which Aldi wine is the best bang for your buck?

Discount supermarket giant Aldi has offered a first look inside their luxe Sydney wine bar, open for just two nights in the NSW capital this weekend.

The event sold out in a matter of minutes last week, with tickets going for just $4.41 (less than the cost of a single iceberg lettuce and arguably making it the city’s cheapest date night ever.).

Across July 15 and 16, eager diners will be treated to a night at the Trophy Room, where they can indulge in the German retailer’s award-winning wines and cheeses.

After being greeted with a gin cocktail, made from Darley’s London-style gin, guests will sample seven Aldi wines at the bar.

The most expensive glass of wine on the menu is a pinot noir from Otago for $2.49, while the priciest cheese is a Spanish manchego for 90c. It’s an absolute bargain in any economy – but particularly appealing in the face of soaring inflation – with the pop-up intended to showcase the grocery store’s affordability.

“We know Australians are looking at their budgets in the face of rising costs and are having to make choices about how they spend their hard-earned cash,” Aldi Australia cheese buyer Shane Aitken said in a statement.

“At Aldi, we’ve always had a clear point of view that Aussies don’t have to make a choice between seriously great quality products, and purchasing low-cost groceries. Our cheese range is an amazing example of this.

“We’re incredibly proud that our cheeses have been recognised as some of the highest quality products in Australia. There’s nothing more important to us than delivering Aussies exceptional products at such an affordable price point so that everyone can afford a lavish cheese spread to be proud of.”

An Aldi spokesman confirmed last week that tickets for the event sold out almost instantaneously, as locals scrambled to secure a spot.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response for the pop-up Trophy Room and our customers were eager to get their hands on tickets, which did sell out in a matter of minutes,” he said.

“To those people unable to get their hands on the coveted tickets, our reassurance to them is that the products are all available for sale from Aldi at exactly the same low prices.”

The cheapest wine bar in the city comes at a time when Aussies are increasingly concerned about the cost of living, with recent data revealing more than half of supermarket shoppers are worried about the rising price of groceries.

The data, collected by PricewaterhouseCoopers, showed that nearly half of consumers cut back on dining out and nearly a quarter reduced their alcohol expenditure.

Aldi wine expert and buying director Jason Bowyer said the Trophy Room was a good reminder that a night out doesn’t need to be expensive.

“The Trophy Room is a first for Aldi Australia, demonstrating that a fine wine and dining experience doesn’t have to dent your wallet,” he said.

“And what’s even better, you can replicate the exact experience at home.”

No doubt many Australians will be doing just that – and hoping the experience will be replicated again elsewhere across the country.
