Woolworths launches new mango variety with ‘unexpected twist’

This grocery item is synonymous with Aussies summer – and now Woolworths has made eating the food product a more enjoyable experience.

Woolworths has announced a new variety of an Australian summer staple has hit shelves, described as the “world’s best” by some fans.

The Maha Bliss mangoes are now sold in all Woolworths stores in South Australia, Victoria, NSW and most stores in Queensland.

The mango has been specially grown to be easier to eat and features a thinner, flatter seed compared than Aussies are used to.

Other varieties have a thicker and larger seed, making it hard to slice, thus solving a frustration many Aussies have when it comes to the fruit.

“While people are very familiar with Kensington Pride and Calypso mangoes, we actually have a dozen varieties of mango on offer over the season, including the lesser known Maha Bliss,” Paul Turner, Woolworths’ director of fruit and vegetables, said.

“Maha Bliss look a little bit different, like a long mango – however the unexpected twist is actually their incredibly thin seed, which means customers get more flesh for their buck.

“Nothing says Australian summer like a juicy Australian-grown mango, and customers will be excited to see them starting to pop up in their local stores.”

The variety was first planted in WA back in 2016, with a report by the ABC describing the Maha Bliss – also known elsewhere as the Mahachanok – as a “mango variety very few Australians have heard of”.

The fruit is so popular, it has been described by fans on a farming forum as “gold” and the “world’s best mango”.

This year, in a bid to help Aussies save, mangoes are being added to the Odd Bunch range which are charged at 20 per cent less than their counterparts.

The mangoes may look a little different on the outside, but these are only superficial and don’t effect the taste.

All mangoes at Woolies are 100 per cent Aussie grown, coming from 120 farms mostly in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

In order to get the best taste, Aussies are told not to focus on colour as fruits such as the Brooks mango are still green at their ripest, but instead judge by feel and smell.

Once home, to get the best life out of them, mangoes should be stored at room temperature without any covering before being transferred to the fridge once completely ripe.
