Vegemite teams up with Green’s to bring a sweet side to staple

The Aussie supermarket is selling a new version of a cult staple – but not everyone is convinced by the $6 item, with some labelling it “too much”.

$6 item Aussies 'dare to try'

It’s an Aussie favourite, spread on morning toast around the country, but every now and then Vegemite likes to mix things up with different iconic collaborations.

One such joint venture came out in November last year with the moreish Vegemite Coles Roast Chicken.

But now, the brand is embarking on a sweeter collaboration, as it teams up with baking product manufacturer Green’s for the release of the Vegemite Choc Chunk Brownie packet mix, priced at $6.

TikTok account @snackreviews_aus said a lot of people thought it was fake when she initially posted it on social media.

“All you have to do is combine the mixture, which has a subtle Vegemite smell, with butter and eggs,” Emily, the woman behind the account, told her followers.

“Give it a really good mix and then bake it in the oven.”

She said that the brownies had a faint Vegemite taste, “to the point where many wouldn’t know it was there”, but the actual brownie was “fudgy and chewy” which she enjoyed.

She rated it an eight out of 10.

“Vegemite brownies are REAL! Would you dare to try? These are by Green’s, and I found it in Coles,” she captioned the video. ️

Some people were thrilled with the product, but others were a little more hesitant.

“They’re doing way too much now, bro. Should have stopped at the chicken,” one social media user commented.

Another disagreed: “Nah that actually sounds so good.”

“I just know I would like this. I liked the Vegemite baked beans, so bring it on,” another said.

Green’s and Vegemite are both proud of the new sweet and salty collaboration.

Peta Allsopp, Green’s head of marketing and innovation, said: “We are incredibly excited to be partnering with everyone’s favourite spread Vegemite to launch Green’s Vegemite Choc Chunk Brownie.

“Our baking team has expertly blended the taste of Vegemite with delicious rich chocolate to deliver a mouth-watering salted caramel flavoured brownie that is sure to satisfy big and little Vegemites.”

Meanwhile Vegemite marketing manager Jess Hoare said: “Vegemite truly is the taste of Australia, wonderful in savoury recipes and delightful in brownies.

“We’re super excited to be partnering with Green’s to bring the Vegemite Choc Chunk Brownie to Australia.

“Whether you’re a longstanding fan of Vegemite, or have a passion for trialling the unexpectedly wonderful, we hope you love this product.”

The brownie packet mix arrived on shelves in Coles and independent grocers on March 1, but shoppers won’t be able to snag it in Woolworths until April 24.
