‘Shocking’ price of bagel at Sydney cafe leaves Aussies horrified
Australians are seeing red over Sydney’s “crazy” prices after a local woman shared the “shocking” amount she paid for a bagel.
A Sydney woman claims she was left feeling physically sick after forking out $25 for a smoked salmon bagel.
Hannah Bowman purchased the “annoyingly delicious” meal from a bakery for lunch after popping out to buy a coffee.
But the podcast producer said she was left reeling when she went to pay for the food and was met with a $25 bill.
Despite paying the price and leaving without complaint, Hannah took to social media to document her shock, prompting many to agree the cost of living crisis was getting “out of control”.
“Guys, I’ve been the victim of a heinous crime,” she said in a recent video.
“I just went for a little walk to buy a coffee and I walked past a bakery and I saw this bagel.
“I thought, ‘I’m gonna just buy my lunch now,’ because it looks delicious.”
Hannah went on to explain she’d never bought anything from the eatery before, though she didn’t name the venue.
“Tell me why when I went to tap they said, ‘That’ll be $25 please.’
“For one smoked salmon bagel. Is this a mistake?”
“Can that be real?”
She concluded the video by stating she felt “sick” at the exorbitant price, captioning the clip with a similar sentiment along with the hashtags “#costofliving #sydney #sydneyfood”.
The video quickly captured attention from shocked social media users who asked: “How can they justify that?”
“I would have walked away,” one said.
“Excuse me? $25?” another wrote.
“This is shocking,” someone else commented.
“It’s just getting crazy in Sydney,” another said.
“I know inflation is real but that’s a bit too much,” wrote someone else.
One woman simply said: “Criminal.”
Hannah responded to some of the outraged commenters, explaining that while the bagel was “annoyingly delicious” she was still shaken by the “wild” cost.
“Look, I’ll admit it was very yummy. But I am still shocked at the price,” she wrote.
Hannah isn’t the first Australian to take issue with the rising costs of everyday essentials.
One Melbourne woman went viral after being left in disbelief over the price of a coffee at Sydney Crown Towers.
Traci amassed millions of views after paying $8.90 for a latte, which included a $1 fee for soy milk, at the swanky hotel, adding the coffee was “average” in taste at best.
Meanwhile another diner shared a photo of the disappointing double cheeseburger purchased for $17 at Queensland’s Australia Zoo.
The burger, presumably from the Sunshine Coast attraction’s Crikey Cafe, was shared on Reddit where its price and appearance left many horrified.
Commenters described the burger as “a joke” as well as labelling it a “miserable” and “atrocious” sight.
