Horror at Australia Zoo’s ‘atrocious’ $17 cheeseburger

A man has left social media in shock after sharing a snap of the “miserable” meal he says he received when buying lunch at the Queensland attraction.

‘Un-Australian’: New Macca’s burger slammed

A diner has shared a photo of the disappointing double cheeseburger he claims to have received at Queensland’s Australia Zoo after paying $17 for the meal.

The burger, presumably from the Sunshine Coast attraction’s Crikey Cafe, was shared on Reddit where it left many horrified.

In the snap, the burger – comprised of a bun, two beef patties, a bit of cheese and not much else – has been pulled apart to show it in all its glory.

But many were horrified by the dish over its appearance and “extortionate” price.

The photo drummed up hundreds of comments, with many invoking the late Steve Irwin’s catchphrase: “Crikey.”

“This is what passes as $17 double cheese burger at Australia Zoo,” Reddit user Simke11 posted in the r/brisbane thread on Sunday, alongside the less than appealing photo.

The comments came in thick and fast, with many pointing out all its apparent “faults”.

“Yet another reason I go by there on the regular and will never stop there,” one person wrote.

“I think they missed half the advertised name of what you ordered,” another said.

“Where the f**k is the sauce the burger is bone dry,” wondered another, while a third wrote: “On top of everything else that’s wrong … WHERE THE F**K IS THE CHEESE?”

Another joked they “didn’t realise the caterers from Fyre had come to Australia”, a reference to the food offerings at Billy McFarland’s doomed luxury festival back in 2019.

The man who posted the burger said it was “dry and stale” and speculated it had been “constantly reheated for the past few days”.

“Next time we are bringing our own food,” he added, to which many people agreed, telling him: “You will never regret home made Vegemite sangas.”

“I have become that middle aged man that makes egg and lettuce sandwiches for the family every time we go somewhere,” one user said.

“And then while we eat our packed lunch, I speak of the savings and rant how expensive and average looking the food is at the venue. Love it.”

Others took issue with the burger’s insane price – though one user, who said they “worked there for a few years during the mid 00s”, declared the cafe had “always” had “mad pricing”.

“I think a 600ml bottle of water went for about $3.50 or so back then,” they wrote.

Another person added that bottled water at Australia Zoo “is now $5.50, $11.00 for two a couple of weeks ago”.

“Zoos, airports and concerts are criminal for food prices and quality,” commented another.

Many more described the burger as “a joke”, describing it as a “miserable” and “atrocious” sight.
