Popular Woolworths dessert item flooded with complaints
One of the big supermarkets has been forced to defend a popular $36 item after a series of complaints about the dessert being “stale”.
One of the big supermarkets has been forced to defend a popular $36 item after a series of complaints about the dessert.
A customer took to social media to vent their frustrations about Woolworths’ $36 smash cake, with the customer calling it a “waste of money” and essentially inedible.
Many others expressed similar feelings about the cake.
However, a Woolworths spokesperson was forced to step in and defend the item, which consists of a hard chocolate dome filled with lollies stacked on top of a chocolate cake covered in sprinkles.
“Our smash cakes have proven to be hugely popular with our customers and we have sold more than 180,000 of them since they were launched in September 2023,” the spokesperson told news.com.au.
“Every week, we sell almost one million cake products from our bakeries nationwide.
“Our smash cakes are made fresh offsite, frozen for delivery and then defrosted in store. The freezing process does not affect the quality of the cake and it means we’re able to sell a wide and very tasty range of bakery products all year round.
“Feedback on our smash cake range has been overwhelmingly positive and we know they are a hit at celebrations around the nation.”
The spokesperson’s comments come after a social media user vented their frustration after having their daughter’s 9th birthday.
“Daughter’s birthday today. She wanted the smash cake. What a waste of 36 bucks. It was disgusting. Doughy and stale and just yuck,” the customer said, Yahoo reported.
She said there were about 15 lollies, and she’d read reviews that indicated there weren’t many in there.
“But the cake itself is absolutely awful. None of us could eat it,” the mother said.
Other social media users vented similar things, with one saying when they got the cake it was “stale” while another said it was “melted inside”.
But, many others disagreed with how some social media users characterised the cake, with some championing it after turning it into items such as a tennis ball and a soccer ball.
“Woolies smash cake for the win,” one said.
Another said: “My son had this cake and it was actually one of the nicer Woolies cakes, chocolate was nice and a good amount of lollies too.”
Meanwhile, last year, popular social media users @ArvanFamily posted a review after getting their hands on it. Kelly Arvan smashed open the top, saying the topics were good but was keen to see what the actual cake tasted like.
“Oh my god, guys. It’s a Woolworths mudcake — glorified,” she said.
It comes as a cult item thoroughly enjoyed by those in the UK landed in Woolworths.
Peters Ice Cream has partnered with the iconic chocolate brand to launch Cadbury Choc Tops in Coles and Woolworths.
But while the $11.50 freezer item has been declared a “winner” by those who have already tried it, some have been left a little disappointed by its price.
Melbourne food blogger @nectoriouspapi said the ice cream cone – which contains vanilla ice cream coated in the brand’s iconic Dairy Milk – was “insane”.

“These have been out in the UK a while and we’ve finally we got them down under,” he told news.com.au.
“They taste just as good as the cinema versions we grew up with, but I’d argue, they are even better as there’s chocolate at the bottom of the cone too.
“However $11.50 is a little pricey. Some of my followers have joked ‘you need a second mortgage’, but the product is great, so I think it’s worth it.”
