‘Moisture-infused?’: Woolworths item has people scratching heads

Aussies have been scratching their heads over an “odd” detail on a packet of pork chops – but Woolies has revealed what it means.

Little known Woolworths receipt hack

Woolworths shoppers have been left scratching their heads after noticing something “odd” on a popular meat product.

One shopper sparked the confusion after noticing a packet of pork chops were described as “moisture-infused” on the label.

The Woolworths customer was a member of the supermarket’s “bunch” program and had been sent the item for free to review.

But after spotting the unusual description, she had taken Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page to ask for help understanding what it meant, and was quickly met with an avalanche of support.

“Moisture-infused? Have they pumped water into the chops?” one social media user asked.

“Love the description, ‘moisture-infused’. What they really mean is that they’ve added water so (if you buy them) you’re paying more for the water,” another claimed.

A third questioned: “Moisture-infused – is that the same as ‘pumped full of water to make it heavier and having you pay $20 a kilo for that water’?”

Woolworths have since explained there’s a logical reason behind the “bizarre” name.

“We know pork chops taste great when cooked correctly, but they can dry out if you’re not careful,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

“These chops are infused with a small amount of brine to help make them a bit easier for the home cook to perfect.

“The range was developed in close consultation with industry body Australian Pork Limited (APL) and feedback from our customers on the quality has been positive.

“We understand the range may not appeal to everyone, so we continue to stock traditional pork chops in our stores as well.”

The chops, which are sold in a 1.2kg pack, sell for $20, which works out at $16.67/kg – cheaper than the standard pork chops which are $18/kg.

While some were confused, others said they were fans of the moisture-infused meat.

“Those moisture infused piggy chops are so good! So tender too! one user wrote.

“Enjoy your samples ladies and gents and be thankful for anything free,” another said.

One added: “Damn it I want pork chops. I got a plant-based lentil and mushroom microwave meal [as my Woolworths bunch item].”

It’s not the first time the unusual wording has caught the attention of shoppers, with eagle-eyed supermarket-goers first spotting it back in 2020 when the product first hit shelves.

“Woolworths ... please explain why meat is now “moisture infused”? Who asked for this to happen? Basically we now have to have water in our meat and also pay for it at $20/kg?!? #nothappy,” a shopper wrote on Facebook at the time.
