McDonald’s launches new potato menu-item Aussies can’t agree on

The fast-food giant is debuting a quintessentially Australian item on menus across the country – but not everyone agrees on its name.

McDonald’s is introducing a new potato-based menu item that, depending on where you’re from in Australia, will have a different name.

The fast-food giant is debuting “potato scallops with chicken salt” at restaurants from January 11, but fans are already arguing over the name of Macca’s newest product.

Diners in Victoria are insisting the item is a “potato cake”, while those in SA are adamant it’s a “potato fritter”.

However those in NSW and Queensland agree the deep fried potato slice, which is coated in crunchy tempura batter, is a potato scallop.

A post shared by Foodie Mumma Ren on Facebook revealing Macca’s new menu-item has already received over 4000 comments, showing just how passionate Aussies are about the nostalgic menu item.

“Better not call it a potato scallop in Victoria. No one will know what they’re talking about,” one person wrote.

“If you’re a South Australian you would call it a potato fritter,” another said.

“I’m originally from NSW they’ll always be scallops to me,” someone else added.

Regardless of what name you call it, everyone can agree the latest addition – part of McDonald’s summer menu – sounds “delicious”.

“My mouth is watering,” one said.

“This on a Big Mac would be amazing,” another wrote.

As well as the potato scallops, which are rumoured to be priced at 2 for $4, McDonald’s is also adding the Aussie Angus Deluxe, McSpicy Deluxe and Hokey Pokey Thickshake to its summer menu.

“Macca’s is giving you another reason to get together this summer, with a menu that’s as good on a roadtrip with mates as it is at the beach or in the backyard on a summer’s day,” Tim Kenward, marketing director at McDonald’s Australia, said.

“We’ve got the latest spins on your burger favourites, topped off with the debut of Potato Scallops with Chicken Salt and Hokey Pokey Thickshake.

“Whatever your plans are, we’ve got you covered, because nothing quite goes together like the great Aussie summer and Macca’s.”

The Aussie Angus Deluxe burger features a 100 per cent Aussie Angus beef patty, bacon, beetroot, Macca’s cheese and crispy lettuce with the introduction of tomato relish and aioli – all served on a classic bun.

Meanwhile, the McSpicy Deluxe contains a 100 per cent Aussie, RSPCA-approved chicken fillet covered in a fiery crispy chilli coating, creamy mayo, locally sourced lettuce and cheese alongside fresh tomato that is served on a sesame seed bun.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Hokey Pokey Thickshake has been added after being “highly requested” by customers, containing the honeycomb and vanilla flavour the beloved chocolate block is famous for.

It comes after Macca’s added the Caramilk Hokey Pokey McFlurry to menus across the country in November due to popular demand.
