A man has claimed to have found dozens of deadly spiders in a bunch of bananas he bought from a German supermarket chain in the UK.

Nick Southam, 48, was shopping at Lidl when he returned home to find one of his bananas to be slightly odd in appearance – the skin had a lump on it.

Mr Southam decided to cut open the discoloured lump only to discover several spiders inside.

He later found out they were among the world’s most dangerous.

The shocked father-of-two said he was halfway through eating the fruit when he noticed the lump on its skin.

“I cut the lump open after finishing it, and tiny spiders came out,” he claimed.

“It had small eggs on the side of the banana.

“They were dozens of the tiny things but I didn’t know where they came from.”

He said most were dead and only a few were still active.

Ms Southam, who bought the bananas on March 2, took a photo of one of the spiders which he shared on iSpot, a specialist website to help identify wildlife.

To his disbelief, the results returned, identifying it as a potentially deadly Brazilian wandering spider, also known as a Ctenidae – a species known for having a highly toxic bite.

“It was only after I realised when I researched ‘spider in banana’ that this has happened before,” the engineer said.

After doing his own research Mr Southam also found the spider to be the “deadliest spider in the world”.

“I find it interesting, if a little scary.”

“There have been a few incidents over the past few years of people finding spiders in banana skins.”

He did not explain what he did with the bananas after discovering the spiders lurking inside.

A Lidl spokesperson told news.com.au they were “very sorry” for Mr Southam’s experience.

“At Lidl, we work very closely with our suppliers, both in the UK and abroad, to ensure that the fresh fruit and vegetables in our stores are of the highest possible quality for our customers,” the spokesperson said.

“We would therefore advise the customer to get in touch with our customer services team so that this can be looked into for them.”
