‘Give me 14’: $5 Woolies item divides fans of the original product

Devoted fans of Woolworths' famous mud cake have been left stunned after the supermarket's latest festive surprise took an unexpected twist.

Woolworths has released a miniature version of its iconic chocolate mud cake — but it’s so much more than just a bite-sized piece of cake.

The supermarket giant’s Golden Grove store, in South Australia, took to social media to unveil a $5 version of its classic dessert.

However, upon closer inspection, it’s not actually a teeny tiny version of the famous mud cake.

Instead, Woolies has created a Christmas tree ornament as the Aussie supermarket chain gears up for the festive season.

Some fans were incredibly disappointed by the reality that the $5 offering was not, in fact edible. Others were stoked to have their favourite item immortalised in this way.

“I got excited thinking they were single serve ones,” one social media user said.

Another added: “Wait, so they’re not edible mini mud cakes?”

“Why do you hurt me. Make it for real,” one angry person declared.

One commented: “Please make minis for Christmas dessert tables.”

“Totally think you should make ACTUAL mini mud cakes to eat,” one suggested.

Another social media user commented: “EXCUSE ME. I NEED THESE RIGHT NOW.”

“Awwwwwww I want themmmm,” another said.

One added: “I KEEP ON FORGETTING TO GET ONE EVERY TIME IM THERE SOMEONE PLZ REMIND ME.”

“$2 cheaper than a real cake,” one said.

Another commented: “Nah I’d try and eat that.”

“How dare they do this to me,” one added.

Another social media user said: “Ohhh my goodness! Best news today!”

“Give me 14 of those stat,” another commented.

A Woolworths spokesperson gave news.com.au some insight into the decoration.

“We see the huge year-round affection for our mud cake, and we knew it deserved a spot in the holiday celebrations,” the spokesperson said.

“So what better, quirkier way to honour this sweet staple than by hanging a miniature version of it on the Christmas tree? It’s a wonderful little nod to our iconic sweet staple and we hope it brings a smile to everyone’s face.”

It’s no surprise that Woolworths chose this particular item to honour. Last year, for National Mud Cake Day, Woolies revealed Aussies buy one cake every five minutes from the supermarket.

Over the years, there’s been various twists on the original, including Rocky Road and Pumpkin Spice versions. There was also Hokey Pokey. White chocolate and caramel are permanent fixtures.

“For over 30 years, Woolworths mud cakes have been a beloved treat for Australians. Our classic chocolate mud cake, with its rich ganache and white chocolate drizzle, remains a customer favourite,” Laura McLeod, Woolworths cake category manager, told news.com.au at the time.

“While we cherish our traditional flavours, like our chocolate, white chocolate and caramel mud cakes, we’re always looking for ways to innovate and excite our customers.

“About five years ago, we saw an opportunity to introduce limited-edition mud cakes inspired by global trends. These unique flavours have been incredibly popular, and our customers are also looking forward to our new and exciting mud cake offerings.

“At Woolworths, we’re proud of our mud cake heritage and will continue to create delightful desserts that our customers love.”

Aussies have always raved about Woolies mud cakes. Food creator @AngeEats was a huge fan of the Cookies and Cream variety.

“I had this last time and it was absolutely delicious. The Woolies mud cakes are top tier,” he said.

After trying it, Ange said it was thick and decadent, declaring it was “just as he remembered”.

Aimee Connor, who reimagines recipes to avoid food waste, was a huge fan of the Hokey Pokey cake.

“If I could pick any Woolworths mud cake, it would be the caramel one,” she said.

“You know how when you get the caramel one plus the caramel it’s just a bit too caramel?

“They compliment each other.”
