One supermarket item is purchased every five minutes by Australians, stacking up to 2.6 million every year.
Woolworths’ mud cake is a staple. It’s purchased for birthday parties and office gatherings. Now, the brand is celebrating National Mud Cake Day. It revealed Aussies buy one cake every five minutes from the supermarket.
Over the years, there’s been Rocky Road and Pumpkin Spice versions. There was also Hokey Pokey. White chocolate and caramel are permanent items.
“For over 30 years, Woolworths mud cakes have been a beloved treat for Australians. Our classic chocolate mud cake, with its rich ganache and white chocolate drizzle, remains a customer favourite,” Laura McLeod, Woolworths cake category manager, told news.com.au.
“While we cherish our traditional flavours, like our chocolate, white chocolate and caramel mud cakes, we’re always looking for ways to innovate and excite our customers.
“About five years ago, we saw an opportunity to introduce limited-edition mud cakes inspired by global trends. These unique flavours have been incredibly popular, and our customers are also looking forward to our new and exciting mud cake offerings.
“At Woolworths, we’re proud of our mud cake heritage and will continue to create delightful desserts that our customers love.”
Australians have always raved about the mud cakes. Food creator @AngeEats was a huge fan of the Cookies and Cream mud cake.
“I had this last time and it was absolutely delicious. The Woolies mud cakes are top tier,” he said.
After trying it, Ange declared it was “just as he remembered”. He called it thick and decadent.
Aimee Connor, who reimagines recipes to avoid food waste, was a huge fan of the Hokey Pokey cake.
“If I could pick any Woolworths mud cake, it would be the caramel one,” she said.
“You know how when you get the caramel one plus the caramel it’s just a bit too caramel?
“They compliment each other.”
Even Chris Hemsworth took to social media to say he got a Woolworths White Chocolate mud cake for his birthday.
But, the price point of the baked good has stirred up controversy in the last year. Mud cakes are $6.60. They are currently on sale for $6.
In 2019, the signature Australian cake retailed for $4.80. It cost even less before that, ringing up at the till at just $4.40 in 2018.
In February 2023 it was priced at $5.75 before jumping to $6.40 in April that year. Coles and Woolworths both told news.com.au in February 2023 the price of mud cakes had been “adjusted” following wholesale cost increases from suppliers as the price of raw materials rise – stressing the increase is “market wide”.
The Reddit user called the price rise a “national tragedy”, and other social media users were inclined to agree.

Another said: “Crazy! it seems so recently these were like $4 or even $3.50?”
One said they felt as though the mud cakes had shrunk in size over the years.
“After huge hikes, they have now started advertising that they have cut prices … But only by a fraction of what they have raised them,” one social media user complained.
