Consumers launch theory over ‘small’ Mighty McMuffin meal
A McDonald’s breakfast meal has given way to a customer theory that might explain why some items are looking smaller than usual.
Consumers have taken issue with what they believe to be a trick introduced by McDonald’s to cut costs without its fanbase catching on.
A photo of the fast food giant’s Mighty McMuffin meal shared to social media this week captured attention from consumers who felt it seemed a bit smaller than usual.
Many speculated the chain had fallen victim to “shrinkflation” – a cost saving method adopted by companies whereby a product’s quantity is reduced but its price stays the same.
For $12.95, some customers felt the meal would barely scrape the surface of their appetite.
“Shrinkflation. It’s how places can keep prices low,” one person wrote in response to the photo, which showed a man’s hand splayed out next to the McMuffin as a size reference.
Consumers were within their right to be peeved if McDonald’s had in fact reduced its portion sizes, consumer advocate Adam Glezer from Consumer Champion said.
“In situations like this, I can understand how consumers would feel hard done by, especially with the cost of living going up,” he told news.com.au.
“McDonald’s has had stock standard portions for a long time and if consumers aren’t getting what they would normally expect, they’re rightfully upset.
“Shrinkflation seems to be a common issue these days, and the big loser out of it is the consumer.”
Many were suspicious of the McMuffin’s size, however McDonald’s has yet to confirm if it had made any recent changes to portion sizes.
“Is it a children’s portion?” one person wrote in response, with another describing it, “insulting”.
“I haven’t had McDonalds for years but I have heard more than a few people say it has gone to s**t lately in both size and taste,” someone else wrote.
“I mean yeah they’re small, I still enjoy them, but they’re just gonna keep getting smaller. At least their breakfast meals are quite cheap compared to the regular meals,” another said.
Others were not convinced the meal looked any different to usual.
“That looks normal to me. It’s a standard size English muffin. Nothing to see here,” one wrote.
“This is the most uninformed post I’ve seen on here. The size has not changed in well over a decade for either of the items shown,” another claimed.
McDonald’s was contacted for clarification by news.com.au.
