British expat reveals confusion every time she sees parking sign

A successful car park chain has disappointed British expats who now call Australia home as they keep mistaking it for an iconic sign from home.

A car park has disappointed British expats who now call Australia home as they keep mistaking it for an iconic bakery chain.

TikToker Chloe uploaded a video walking behind the Hilton Hotel on Sydney’s Pitt St where she filmed the Secure Parking sign.

It’s colours are white, yellow and blue. At the front, there are three yellow lines.

“POV: You’re a Geordie in Australia,” the caption on the clip read.

“And you get excited every time you see this logo in the distance thinking it’s a Greggs.”

Gregg’s is a popular bakery chain in the UK. Chloe said all she wanted was a vegan sausage roll.

Gregg’s sells sandwiches, coffee and pastries. It’s sign is very similar to the Aussie parking garage. It’s lettering is white. It’s background colour is blue. Instead of three yellow lines it has four yellow squares.

On TikTok, others shared the same experience.

“The amount of times I have done this is embarrassing. I’ve lived in Australia for 13 years,” one social media user said.

One added: “HAHAHA can’t I just have a single unique thought? Those get me every time!”

“U HAD ME SO EXCITED FOR A SEC I MISS GREGGS SM RN,” one social media user said.

Another added: “STOP I’m not a Geordie but every time I see it I do a double take.”

“I’ve been fooled far too many times,” one revealed.

Another declared: “This was me EVERYTIME when I lived there.”

“I literally did this too when in Sydney! I said today that if anyone could bring Greggs to Oz they’d make an absolute killing! For now I’ll stick with my home made PORK sausage rolls,” one social media user commented.

Others agreed the chain would make a lot of money in Australia.

It’s not the first British-ism that has caused a stir Down Under. Georgia Davies has been living in Melbourne for five years. But the UK woman said there is one phrase you should never say to an Australian.

She said saying “alright” was a form of greeting back home. But, in Australia, it could result in violence.

“So as a form of greeting in the UK, it’s normal to say, ‘you alright’ or even just ‘alright’ for short,” she said on TikTok.

“You’re not actually asking them if they are alright, it’s just another way of acknowledging someone.

“But in Australia, asking ‘you alright?’ is apparently seen as some sort of threat or starting a fight.”
