A new “functional beverage” called Safety Shot promises to rapidly reduce blood alcohol content and improve brain function within 30 minutes.

The drink, set for a launch on the west coast of the US in December, contains a mix of vitamins, minerals and “nootropics” that the company claims can clear intoxication and prevent alcohol poisoning.

According to its website, “Safety Shot has 4 mechanisms of action that target” your central nervous system.

“Attacking all things that alcohol impairs, plus a 5th ‘feel good’ component which no other drink or supposed remedy claims.”

In short, it claims to sober a person up, reduce the effects of alcohol, maintain hydration and improve mental and physical feelings of wellbeing.

Australia recorded 1742 alcohol-induced deaths in 2022, at a rate of 6.0 deaths for every 100,000 people living in Australia.

Moreover, alcohol-induced deaths increased between 2021 and 2022, the fourth consecutive year of an increase, with 2022 the highest reported rate of deaths in a decade.

With the rate of deaths increasing by 9.1 per cent, from 5.4 deaths per 100,000 to 6.0, it equates to an additional 164 deaths.

Of those impacted, men (8.7 deaths per 100,000) are more than twice times as likely to die from alcohol compared to women (3.4 deaths per 100,000). 2022 also marked the highest alcohol-induced death rate per 100,000 people in the last 10 years.

Alcoholic liver disease was the highest underlying cause that contributed to alcohol-induced deaths (1046 deaths) in 2022, followed by mental and behavioural disorders due to alcohol (349 deaths).

The least socio-economically advantaged demographic of Australia is nearly three times as likely to die from alcohol compared to the most advantaged.

Broken down state by state, Tasmania, Queensland and New South Wales reported higher alcohol-induced death rates than the national death rate.

Safety Shot says its patented formula works by speeding up the body’s metabolism of alcohol and protecting the stomach lining from further absorption.

The results of a volunteer study demonstrated that Safety Shot reduces blood alcohol content, doing “so at a much faster rate than the rate of people who did not drink Safety Shot,” stated Safety Shot’s chief scientific officer, Dr Glynn Wilson.

“We have started a double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical study in order to obtain a body of data that demonstrates the clinical benefits of Safety Shot for people who consume alcohol, as well as those that don’t, as its nootropic formula is designed to improve brain function and clarity for anyone who drinks it.”

On September 18, the company announced plans to distribute a concentrated version to hospitals and paramedics to prevent alcohol poisoning deaths. It intends to file for FDA approval for this application.

The company will also need to submit an application to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the peak body regulating medicines and medical devices in Australia which require comprehensive clinical studies to validate any claimed benefits.

However, the TGA underlines that, unless exempt, all therapeutic goods must be included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) before import, supply, or export.

“Australia has a two-tiered, risk-based system for the regulation of medicines,” a TGA spokesperson told news.com.au.
“Medicines are classified as either ‘listed’ (low risk) or ‘registered’ (high risk) based on the ingredients they contain and the therapeutic indications (claimed health benefits) they use.”

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the estimated social cost of alcohol use in Australia was $66.8 billion in 2017–2018.

Safety Shot is owned by Jupiter Wellness, a health and wellness company that acquired the product from GBB Drink Lab Inc. and renamed itself Safety Shot Inc. on September 15.

CEO Brian John said the company is excited to dominate e-commerce and retail in the emerging “rapid alcohol detox” market.

The global hangover cure industry is projected to exceed $US6 billion by 2030.

The drink has attracted celebrity endorsements from NFL player Mike Pouncey and mixed martial artist Héctor Lombard.

“I felt its effects first-hand,” said Lombard, who signed on as a brand ambassador.

“When I do have an occasional drink, I can follow it up with Safety Shot.”

Sold in four-packs and individual cans, Safety Shot is targeted at Millennials and Gen Z consumers interested in hangover remedies and wellness.

“This elixir offers an unparalleled experience … for those who seek the best in health and taste,” said CEO John.

The company believes it could lead to the “biggest disruption in the drink market yet.”
