Aussies have revealed how much they spend on alcohol

The cost of living crisis is forcing Aussies to change the way they spend but there’s one vice that is still costing households big time.

The cost of living crisis may have changed our lifestyle habits, but Aussies are still prepared to spend big on booze.

Drinking culture is a huge part of Aussie culture and not even a cost of living crisis can remove the firm grip it has on us.

Inflation is at 7 per cent, interest rates have spiked to 3.8 per cent and new data also shows rental prices in some suburbs have increased by almost 50 per cent and yet the amount Aussies are forking out on booze might shock you.

A Facebook group dedicated to budgeting has given insight into how people are still spending money on alcohol even as financial pressure mounts.

“How much does everyone spend on alcohol a week or a month? Interested to know what is considered normal,” one person asked in the group, which has over 100,000 members.

The post quickly filled up with over 400 comments, and Aussies got very honest about how much they spend on booze.

While some said they were non-drinkers and and didn’t spend a cent on alcohol, the majority revealed the habit cost them a fair chunk of change weekly.

On the more conservative end of things, people were revealing they spent under $100 on alcohol a week.

“I buy two decent bottles of wine a week, and it costs between $30 and $40,” someone wrote.

“This week, I’ve spent $100. It depends what you are buying. It is $60 for a carton of beer these days,” another pointed out.

“My husband spends $50 a week on a carton of beer. It comes out of his splurge fund, so it doesn’t bother me, but occasionally we will go to a brewery maybe once every two months, and that is about $150 for that outing,” someone shared.

It wasn’t just small spenders though, with some Aussies confessing to spending hundreds a week on alcohol - which is more than the average amount people spend on groceries each week at $167, accrording to Finder.

“Depends on our weekend’s plans, but between the two of us, it can vary between $200 and $400 per week,” one person wrote.

“My partner spends anywhere from $150-$300 a week,” another shared.

“My husband and I were spending about $300 a week, but we’ve spoiled ourselves with top shelf,” one wrote.

“Me and my partner together $350 a week and more on beers at the pub. So for a month, $1400 and probably more. Now I’m adding it up I’m really upset with myself,” one admitted.

“Depends warmer months can easily be $350 per week and colder months perhaps $200 a week. At weekends if we are entertaining, it gets very high! We like to sit down and have a drink together after a long day at work.”

“My partner spends $200 to $400 a week and on weekend, well: mow the lawn to have a beer, clean out the car to have a beer. Gets excited to have a beer,” another shared.

“Partner $140 a week on takeaway alcohol and another $50 at pubs. I think it is too much. Me maybe $200 a year, and that is on $40+ bottles.”
