Customer shares bizarre broccoli display as cost of vegetables soars

The cost of living crisis that has sent the price of vegetables soaring has led to a strange sight in one Woolies store.

A vegetable section at a Woolworths supermarket has sparked confusion after a customer noticed a very odd display.

The customer shared an image to Reddit on Monday night of a display in the fresh produce department typically used for storing lettuce.

Instead, the customer stumbled upon another green vegetable that looked rather out of place – broccoli.

“What in the heck is this Broccoli display Woolworths?” the user wrote.

Reddit users were puzzled by the image, taking to the comments section to share their theories as to why the broccoli had been displayed that way.

“It‘s whack-a-bloc, you gotta hit the broccoli and then it’ll retreat into its little hole,” another user commented.

“They’re chutes connected directly to farms,” said another.

“The farmers pop the broccoli in their end and blast them to Woolies with compressed air.”

A couple of users seemed to hit the nail on the head with one theory.

“They're using broccoli to fill the lettuce holes because they can’t get lettuce,” a user commented.

“Nothing looks worse to Woolworths, the fresh food people, than shelves empty of fresh food.”

“The illusion of lettuce. What a time to be alive,” another said.

A national lettuce shortage caused by east-coast floods and unseasonably frosty conditions have sent prices through the roof.

Some supermarkets have charged as much as $12 for a head of iceberg lettuce in recent weeks.

Major fast-food chain KFC has even turned to using cabbage in their burgers as an alternative.

A new twist in the cost of living crisis has led to a strange discovery by a customer in one Woolworth’s store.

A Woolworths spokerson has put the questions to a rest, sharing the simple reason for the change of display.

“Our store teams may occasionally move products to different locations within their stores,” the spokesman said.
