Christmas Day hosts expecting guests to bring drinks and snacks

THERE are a couple of goodies you need to bring if you want to be welcomed to the Christmas Day feast this year.

IF you are off to a relative’s or friend’s place for Christmas Day celebrations there are some goodies you need to bring if you are to be considered a good guest, a silly season study has found.

According to research released today by Woolworths, almost half (47 per cent) of those hosting Christmas celebrations say friends and family will be supplying the drinks, while a third of guests will be charged with bringing snacks.

Woolworths’ study also revealed the incredible amount of Christmas tucker they will sell leading up to December 25.

The festival favourites include is lead of course by turkey with over 80,000 birds expected to be sold be sold by the supermarket giant, while 550,000 wood smoked hams will pass through check-outs across the country and 50,000 kilos of Turducken.

Seafood remains a firm favourite with Australians too over the Christmas period.

More than 1.2 million kilograms of prawns will be sold, with an incredible 60 per cent of that sold in the two days before December 25.

Woolworths is also expecting to sell more than one million oysters, with 20 dozen oysters opened every minute for three days straight leading up to Christmas.

Woolworths’s Steve Donohue said the figures proved how important food was to end of year celebrations.

“Food is central in creating the magic of Christmas for our customers and sharing with friends and family is a highlight of the season,” said Donohue, who is the Director of Buying and Merchandising.

“Our customers are telling us that ham will continue to take the top spot as their main meat feature on the Christmas table, along with turkey, while prawns will be the people’s seafood of choice and Christmas pudding will be the main showcase when it comes to dessert time.”

Get things right and Christmas will be a breeze.

Over six million fruit mince pies will be sold, Woolworths said, along with over half a million pavlovas.

Fruit is also central to Christmas celebrations. Over 900,000 punnets of cherries will be sold, 1.7 million mangoes and around three million packs of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries.
