GEORGE Clooney and Tom Cruise love the Kobe beef, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban head straight for the baked potato with caviar and chestnut tortellini, but the chicken pot pies are the most popular dish of all.

American celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck will be feeding more than 1500 of Hollywood's biggest names at the official Oscars after-party, the Governor's Ball.

Having catered for the event for the past 18 years, he has a good feel for what the stars like to eat.

Rather than a formal meal, he has devised a menu of more than 50 hors d'oeuvres and small plates so everyone can get what they like.

"Because we have so many different dishes it is really very easy,'' Mr Puck said.

"We've gone from a formal sit-down dinner to more of a party. People don't want to have a big plate in front of them. They'd rather have small plates and try little things.

"If someone just loves sushi we can make a plate of sushi, or if someone likes comfort food we have pot pie, shepherds pie or macaroni and cheese.''

No expense is spared. Included in the shopping list for the event are more than 10kg of black caviar, 20kg of black truffle from France, 450 Maine lobsters, 60 sides of salmon, 300 chickens and 120kg of Kobe beef. Nearly 5000 chocolate Oscar statuettes are covered in gold leaf.

One hundred bottles of Dom Perignon are chilled ready for the winners. More champagne, wine from the Napa Valley, plus a few other special labels, are also available.

Three hundred staff will be working in the kitchen, with another 600 in the dining room.

"Nobody has ever told me not to put any caviar on or truffles on,'' Mr Puck said. "It's a great party so it is okay,''

While leftover food goes straight to a local mission for homeless people, Mr Puck said the stars ate surprisingly well.

"The girls are all particularly hungry because none of them eat all day long. By the time they go to hairdresser, do their make up and nails, it takes hours and hours. By 9.30 at night they might only have had a cup of tea and a piece of toast.''
