Drive through? Top of the Terrace has plenty of visual stimulation for motoring hobbyists and tragics. Memorabilia and paraphernalia dealing with various parts of the car industry make it a perfect stop for
those on a car-club country drive. There are photos, old Match Box cars, maps,
oil cans, pit passes, posters, car grilles, road signs and even a mask resembling Aussie racing legend Peter Brock, who was killed in a racing accident in the 2006 Targa West rally. Being on the second floor, a lift is available for those unable to make the stairs.
Terrace Tower: There surely isn’t a person alive who could take a proper bite out of the monstrous Top of the Terrace Tower without dislocating their jaw. Between slices of thick toast is a scotch fillet, a hamburger, onion jam and salad. Ordering “the lot” adds bacon, egg and cheese, which I recommend – a classic combination. It comes with crispy chips, but good luck getting through them. My dining partner had fish and chips,
but being 70km from the coast, didn’t expect the battered offering to be freshly caught.
Dining tip: Always eat where people who know about food are eating. An international food festival will run in Toodyay on the weekend of August 6-7 (the same weekend as the Avon Descent). The day I visited, the foodies from the region were having a planning lunch on the balcony; a good enough testimony for me.
Choose your own adventure: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are on the menu at
Top of the Terrace but for some the balcony overlooking the main drag of Toodyay
is just a pleasant place to sit for a coffee and dessert. The food ranges from hearty
to light salads, fish, curries and pasta. There’s a daily takeaway lunch menu
and every Wednesday and Thursday nights they offer a different buffet for just $20.
