A Kmart worker has shared the incredible way she dropped nearly 30kg in five months by changing one simple thing.

Growing up, Christie Wills said she was always in great shape, loved being active and played all types of sports with her friends.

The 27-year-old from Melbourne had never struggled with weight in her life – so when the number on the scales slowly crept up during the pandemic, she had no idea what to do.

Sitting at around 60kg before, Christie says she barely realised she was gaining until one morning she stepped on the scale to find she was 84kg.

But after making a simple change, she was able to lose a whopping 26kg in just four months.

“I didn’t even realise it was happening,” she told news.com.au.

“It totally just crept up on me. I gained the weight so slowly, that I hardly even noticed.

“I can’t really pinpoint one particular reason, but I guess I just stopped caring a bit about my health. I was eating whatever I wanted and stopped working out.

“I had no structure at all and just let myself go.”

She recalls seeing a recent photograph of herself at her heaviest weight and feeling like she “didn’t recognise” the person in the snap.

“It was a huge wake up call,” she revealed.

“I had no idea I looked like that. I didn’t spend much time looking in the mirror, so to see it in a picture like that was really confronting.

“It was the motivation I needed to get started on my health journey.”

Aussie's insane weight loss transformation

Feeling overwhelmed at where to start, Christie decided to begin her weight loss journey by doing the simplest thing she could think of – putting one foot in front of the other.

She began walking 5-7km every single day without fail, and would venture out into the world rain, hail or shine to get her steps in.

Paired with her physically demanding retail job at Kmart, she was averaging an impressive 30,000 steps a day.

“It might not seem like much, but that simple change made a huge difference,” she said.

“I actually hurt my ankle last December, so the walking at first was more to help get my ankle back into shape. But I got so much more out of it.

“I began slimming down quite quickly. It was so simple, but very effective.

“People really disregard the power of a humble walk, but it’s such great exercise. I managed to lose 20kg just by walking.

“After that, I started going to the gym as well to do some weightlifting. I feel incredible.

“It was not only helping my physical health, but my mind feels so much better for it.”

Christie’s job takes up much of her week and she usually clocks in mammoth 50 hour weeks working at retail giant Kmart.

Due to her busy schedule, she used to rely on fast food options and would frequently go through the McDonald’s drive-through on her way home from work.

She would visit the takeaway joint at least four times a week, tucking in to burgers, fries and soft drinks.

A self-confessed former “junk food addict”, Christie said the first step to overhauling her diet was cutting out her McDonald’s habit for good.

She has also stopped drinking soft drink, opting instead for water.

“I needed to get rid of fast food, especially Maccas,” she explained.

“It was a bit of an addiction, but more so it was pure convenience. I just did not make the time to cook and prepare healthy meals, so that was the easiest alternative.

“I don’t deprive myself, and still enjoy treats on occasion. But I feel so much better fuelling my body with the nutrition it needs.”

She now opts for healthy, balanced meals that incorporate a good amount of protein, fats and carbs on the plate.

Christie now plans her meals in advance to ensure she always has a nutritious option at home, rather than needing to rely on takeaways.

To help lose the weight, she also downloaded a calorie counting app called ‘My Net Diary’ to help track her meals.

In just four months, Christie managed to get down to 56kg, but has since put on 2kg more as she says she feels her best at 58kg.

She has also gone from a dress size 14 to a size 6 and is now able to fit back into her old clothes.

Christie continues to share her incredible journey on TikTok and hopes that by being open about her story, it will help to inspire others who may be on the same path.

“If I can do it, anyone can do it,” she said.

“The hardest part is just getting started. But once you begin seeing results and you’re feeling better, you will be hooked.

“It might seem difficult at the beginning, but it is so worth it. I feel better than ever and couldn’t be happier.”
