Our livers do a very good job of flushing toxins, breaking down fats and detoxifying chemicals. So for me, a detox is a great way to kick some bad eating habits and pave the way for a healthier and more permanent lifestyle change.
One of the biggest misconceptions of detoxing is going hungry — or hangry! Only being allowed to eat celery sticks, drink hot water, and fill up on cans of tuna is neither sustainable nor enjoyable.
If you want to kickstart a stronger, leaner and healthier you, you’ll want to detox without starvation.
Here’s how.
1. START THE DAY RIGHT
Get that kettle boiled and make yourself a hot water with fresh lemon first thing.
This detox classic improves digestion, supports your immune system, stimulates the elimination of toxins and alkalises your body.
It also helps rehydrate your body after a night’s sleep.
2. GO GREEN
Once you’ve finished your hot water and lemon, supercharge your body’s cleansing mode with a green smoothie.
Green fruit and veg are packed with fibre that’ll help you stay regular and satisfied.
I whip up my Lean Green Smoothie (made from spinach, avocado, chia seeds and banana) on the reg, which is a detox must.

3. MAKE YOUR OWN SNACKS
Don’t be fooled. Cafe muffins and muesli slices are not that healthy.
The best way to avoid unnecessary sugar and midmorning hunger pains is to make your own snacks. And it doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive (trust me, quick and easy is my cooking rule).
4. DON’T BE AFRAID TO SNACK
Starvation doesn’t equal cleansing. So, just because you’re on a detox doesn’t mean you can’t eat if you’re hungry — I think that’s one of the biggest misconceptions.
You’re detoxing from toxins, chemicals and processed sugars, not food! Remember, deprivation often leads to bingeing.
5. GET MOVING
When a food craving hits, try going for a walk or smashing out a workout. Exercise will help take your mind off the craving and the natural release of endorphins will keep you focused and motivated. You don’t have to work out for hours either.

6. EAT REAL FOOD
Eating whole, unprocessed foods is an easy way to avoid going hungry. Swap frozen diet meals for fresh veggies and lean meats.
My TIFFXO meal plan is packed with recipes that are not only delicious but are made with protein and healthy carbs to help keep you full. It also caters for vegetarians and most food intolerances so you’ll never feel deprived.
7. ADD SPICE
If you can’t keep those sugar cravings at bay, try adding spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom to your cooking. They’ll help balance your blood sugar and reduce sugar cravings.
8. DRINK UP
It goes without saying you must stay hydrated during any detox.
Sip on water in between meals, with meals, during exercise and especially when you wake up. Drinking water helps your body to flush toxins, aids digestion and keeps you feeling full for longer.
Don’t be afraid to pimp up your water too. Lemon, lime and orange slices, cucumber and fresh mint complement any water bottle.
