Welcome to You Got This, news.com.au’s weekly slice of fitness inspiration featuring tips and advice from real women who’ve experienced it all.

A mother-of-two has gone on to lose 40kg in just under a year after becoming fed up with how she was feeling.

Rose Enniss, 30, from Tasmania, couldn’t help but feel tired and grumpy all the time.

She said her lack of energy and constant fatigue came down to fuelling her body with excessive amounts of overprocessed foods and sugary treats.

“When I had my first daughter in 2013, I had gained a lot of weight, reaching about 100kg,” Rose told news.com.au.

“I just left it – I was a busy mum and didn’t have time for me. But it got to a point where after a few years later I became really depressed and couldn’t even look at myself.”

After trying several fad diets and realising there’s “no magic pill”, Rose signed up to The Healthy Mummy where she went on to lose almost 40kg.

However, following the birth of her second child at the end of 2020, Rose said she found herself “right back at the start” after putting the weight she had initially lost, back on.

“I knew where this path led. I struggled so much after my first. I was determined not to

go there again, so I started right back at the start,” Rose said.

The mother-of-two began by making small changes two weeks after giving birth, such as cutting down on her snacks and sugary foods that she found herself “reaching for again”.

“I didn’t want to rush it because if I put pressure on myself, it wouldn’t have worked,” Rose said.

She jumped back on The Healthy Mummy, focusing on eating more nutrients-based foods and in just under a year, went on to drop six dress sizes, going from a size 18 to a 8/10.

“My energy is back, I’m not struggling with everyday tasks and I don’t want to sit on the side and watch everything go by anymore,” Rose said.

“I want to smash my workouts, which still blows my mind, the old me hated exercise.”

Rose said once she got the all clear from her doctor, she began to exercise seven weeks after giving birth to her second child.

“I started with post-partum exercises on the app, before working my way up to more advanced workouts, which were a mix of tabata and HIIT.”

Rose said with it being her second weight loss journey, she felt more in control.

“It has taken me a year this time to get to my goal weigh – I knew what I was doing more and I have also started calorie counting which I find helps me personally, particularly managing my extra snacking.”

Rose said she still eats whatever she wants, but just in moderation.

“I’m still eating pasta and having a chocolate every night – I just have everything in portion sizes.”

She tends to meal prep every Sunday, particularly her favourite treats such as choc chip banana muffins.

“I miss out on nothing. I love food and I eat so much more variety now than I ever have,” Rose said, adding that she just makes sure it fits in her calorie target.

“I feel awesome without sounding like I am bragging,” she laughed.

“I feel good again and I am happy to go shopping and leave the house without feeling grumpy or tired.”

The 30-year-old said for fellow mums wanting to make a lifestyle change, to “keep it simple and don’t complicate it”.

“Try to slip five minutes in each day. Eventually you figure out how things work better for you and your family.

“I do my workouts before the girls get up or while they’re having breakfast.

“Just don’t let a stumble wreck all your hard work. Start again – there’s always going to be ups and downs but just try for more ups. Slow and steady will win the race.”
