Welcome to You Got This, news.com.au’s weekly slice of fitness inspiration featuring tips and advice from real women who’ve experienced it all.

At the start of 2019, Renee Roberts found herself at a weight which she struggled to believe was true.

The then 20-year-old from Sydney had reached 105kg and was feeling lost and uncomfortable, with her weight gain affecting her relationship with friends and her boyfriend.

“When I saw that number on the scale, I was so shocked and upset, putting the blame on the scale instead of realising that my actions caused this,” Renee told news.com.au.

She decided to put the scales away, “wanting to believe” it was wrong, however she said this tactic did nothing to stop the sad emotions she was feeling after seeing those three numbers.

The now 22-year-old said she was so embarrassed at the time, that she would cut the tags off her size 18 skirts.

“I didn’t want the tags to pop out when I was out and if people asked me where I got my clothes from I would just pretend and say I didn’t remember,” Renee explained.

“I also remember my boyfriend waiting one hour for me before we were meant to go out because nothing would fit. We ended up going to Kmart to buy a skirt.”

Renee said it was in that moment that she promised herself she would make a change.

She signed up to Equalution, an online macronutrients-based program, where she went on to lose an impressive 37kg.

“Before that I did half-hearted diets and cut out carbs and would do random things I would find on the internet, but I never committed 100 per cent or saw results,” she said.

“I was so sick of being upset about it, it affected my relationship with my boyfriend and friends because I would never want to go out or socialise — so it was a now or never approach I had.”

After joining Equalution, she quickly realised she didn’t need to eliminate the foods she loved to reach her ideal weight goal, such as peanut butter oats, chicken fried rice and toasties.

“Teaching people there is no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ food is really important especially in the social media world we live in today where there’s a lot of false information out there,” she said.

The customised program is based on a client’s goals and factors in their body measurements and weekly exercise schedule.

Renee said she has always been active, attending F45 classes four times a week and participating in outdoor sports on the weekends, with the main change being her nutrition.

“I started focusing on consistency, ensuring I followed my meal plan and attended the gym even when I didn’t want to,” she explained.

“During the weekday I created a solid routine, prepping my food for the week on Sundays to set myself up for the week to limit my excuses and made sure I went to the same gym class each day.”

It slowly became habitual and something she began to do mindlessly.

“At F45 I did a mix of cardio and weights, more of a HIIT training approach, but now I focus on mainly strength/weight training as this is what brings me joy.”

Today, Renee said she feels confident and happier than ever before. She is also reminded by her boyfriend that she is beautiful no mater what, adding that her transformation hasn’t made him love her any more or less.

“He never brings my weight up and always reassures me he loved me prior to my transformation and now,” she said.

“I love that I am strong. I love that my favourite part about my body has nothing to do with what it looks like but rather what it can do.”
