ADELAIDE’S 101-year-old skydiving granny Irene O’Shea has been granted a clean bill of health from her doctor and will now attempt the record for the oldest skydiver in the world.
Speaking to The Advertiser, her son-in-law Mike FitzHenry said Mrs O’Shea passed her medical exam with flying colours yesterday.
“It went very well indeed, it was fantastic – she was absolutely spot on,” he said of the thrillseeking great grandmother. “He (the doctor) has given her the OK and now we’ve got to make the arrangements.”
As part of the medical, Mr FitzHenry said Mrs O’Shea, of Athelstone, was made to “lift her legs and stand up and sit down” without anyone’s assistance.
“She did all of those things (and) she also had a blood pressure check and then she was weighed,” he said.
Despite having a hip replacement late last year, Mr FitzHenry said Mrs O’Shea’s body was in good order to undertake a skydive, likely next month.
Last year, Mrs O’Shea marked her 100th birthday by skydiving to raise money for motor neurone disease. The current world record for the oldest person to skydive is a man aged 101 and 38 days. Ms O’Shea turned 101 on May 30.
Mr FitzHenry said Mrs O’Shea was “extremely happy” with the news.
“I’ve just left her as she’s off to one of her clubs now - the over 50s, would you believe, down at Campbelltown Council,” he chuckled.
“They sit around and have a sandwich and a cup of tea.”
