Kyly Clarke reveals painful Dancing With The Stars injuries

Former WAG Kyly Clarke has shared the toll Dancing With The Stars took on her body – revealing the body part that got badly hurt.

For Kyly Clarke the expression “no pain, no gain” took on a new meaning while competing on Dancing With The Stars.

The 39-year-old, who narrowly missed out on the glitterball trophy during Sunday night’s finale, is still nursing an injury despite filming wrapping up weeks ago.

“My ribs absolutely got smashed,” she told news.com.au.

“There was lots going on, I still have a sore knee from doing the dance and slide on the floor, but at the end of the day no pain, no gain.”

Kyly returned to the dance floor this year after previously competing on the 2014 season where she had to bow out due to a hamstring injury.

The memory of the incident caused Kyly to understandably be a lot more cautious the second time around.

“I am older, obviously I have had a child so you don’t really know how your body is going to respond to a different kind of exercise,” she said.

“I think in the first three weeks I was very conscious about not stretching too far, making sure I didn’t do things without warming up.”

Two weeks before the show began Kyly abandoned her normal gym training routine to instead focus on stretching.

“I actually backed off going to the gym, because the gym is all about being bulkier and also tightening your muscles,” she said.

“I knew what wasn’t in my favour was my flexibility, I hadn’t danced for so, so long.”

Dancing With The Stars saw Kyly dancing for up to seven hours a day and heading to the physio or getting a massage afterwards to ensure her body was in tip-top shape.

Kyly Clarke’s exercise regimen

Kyly has always led an active lifestyle, attending selective Westfield Sports High School where she later met her now ex-husband, Michael Clarke.

The former professional cricketer and Kyly married in 2013, however, announced their split in February last year.

Today Kyly likes to do a combination of gym strength work, cardio and barre exercises to stay in shape.

“My go-tos are doing weights at the gym. I chose to do weights because you can isolate muscles and you can gain bulk in the desired areas for your body,” she said.

“I also incorporate Barre Attack, I do that at home now and that basically focuses on more functional movements and it targets the smaller muscles, and that gives you a further toned appearance but in a real subtle way.”

When it comes to cardio, Kyly said it can be anything from a bike ride with five-year-old daughter Kelsey Lee, who she shares with Michael, or a coastal walk.

“I always do cardio whether it’s 20, 30 minutes or an hour, just depends on the day and what I’m focusing on,” she said.

“I think it’s fabulous to get outside and get some fresh air, enjoy the country we’re in and do something like the Bondi to Bronte walk, that incorporates hills, stairs and a beautiful view.”
