Grandma, 76, stuns Australia’s Got Talent audience
This demure, polite 76-year-old grandmother left the Australia’s Got Talent crowd stunned when she unveiled her big “secret”.
You’d be forgiven for thinking this woman was decades younger than her 76 years, especially when she stripped down to a purple string bikini.
Janice Lorraine appeared on Seven’s Australia’s Got Talent on Monday night, but decided to surprise the audience with her act by hiding her incredibly toned figure beneath a demure pair of black pants and a white blazer.
“Hello, my name is Janice, I’m 76-years-old,” she told the crowd.
“I’ve been working on something for quite some time and I’d love to share it with you all.”
When asked by judge Shane Jacobson if she could share what her talent was, the septuagenarian replied: “No, not really, I think I’d rather keep it a secret and just come out and do it”.
What happened next left everyone in the audience, including the judging panel, completely stunned.
To the sounds of Donna Summer’s iconic hit song Hot Stuff, Janice strutted out onto the stage in a shiny purple bikini, showcasing her jaw-dropping body, as the crowd went absolutely wild.
Janice has been training and competing for the last two decades, ever since she signed up to a gym after her retirement when she was 55 years old.
The mother-of-three attributed her toned physique to training, six days a week, with a rest day on Sunday.
As the grandmother danced around the AGT stage, flexing her muscles and contorting her body into different positions, it was hard to look anywhere but at the elderly bodybuilder’s phenomenal figure.
Afterwards, the judges heaped praise on the contestant, with singer Nicole Scherzinger calling her an “inspiration.”
“You're an inspiration and super cool, it’s a yes from me,” she said.
Fellow judges Shane Jacobson and Lucy Durack also gave Janice a yes, which secured her spot in the next round of the AGT competition.
Celebrity chef Manu Feildel said he couldn’t believe Janice’s body was better than his.
The grandmother had a quick response to Manu, that brought the house down: “Oh I don’t know, I can’t see your body, really.”
In the end, he voted to kick her out, but was outnumbered by the huge support on the judges panel.
JANICE’S JOURNEY
The mother-of-three has spent the past two decades fighting age and gender stereotypes to conquer the bodybuilding industry.
Janice began bodybuilding after retiring from her job as a registered psychologist at 55, “amid doubters and scoffers due to my age, gender and size”.
In an interview with website Starts at 60, Janice said she decided to sign up to a gym after an experience in a local shopping centre carpark.
“I was in the car park and I saw this old woman getting out of the car next to me,” Janice said.
“There was flesh hanging from her arms and legs, she could barely walk.
“I thought the poor thing, I’m not going to be like that.”
Since developing a passion for the sport, Janice has gone on to win 12 world titles, including Miss Olympia.
HOW SHE DOES IT
Since seeing her on the AGT stage, fans have asked how Janice managed to keep in such incredible shape at nearly 80 years old.
In an interview withSunrise two years ago, Janice revealed she works out on 13 machines in her local gym, three days a week.
“When I’m not at the gym, I do an 8km walk, 30 push-ups on my toes, 30 push-ups on my knees, back leg raises and abs,” Janice said at the time.
While she didn’t view herself as an exercise “extremist”, she wanted to show the world that life doesn’t stop once you grow older.
FINDING LOVE
As well as challenging common biases around older women in the fitness world, Janice has also broken stereotypes about relationships later in life.
Janice has found love with a man 23 years her junior, and the pair couldn’t be happier.
David Kendall has been by Janice’s side for the past 28 years, after they met at a club, where a 48-year-old Janice had been with her daughter.
“He’s been so wonderful to me,” she told Starts at 60.
“We just work so well together. A lot of times in relationships, in marriages, the husband or wife is envious of the other but it hasn’t happened here.
“It’s been absolutely wonderful.”
