6 Weeks To Sexy week 2: How to change your mindset
IT continues to be an underrated element of a successful fat-loss program (and more importantly, a happy life) — your mindset. Here’s how to control yours.
IT continues to be an underrated element of a successful fat-loss program (and more importantly, a happy life) — your mindset.
We always set a plan with good intentions but often our approach to a new plan can fall flat on its face pretty quickly because we think that excitement and motivation is going to carry us through. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that EXCITEMENT and your high initial levels of motivation won’t necessarily last too long.
That rush isn’t enough to carry you through your workouts later down the road — it takes much more than that. After the excitement of starting something new wears off, it takes consistency, hard work and building the habits.
When it comes to staying motivated, taking the time to address your ‘headspace’ and those things that are impacting you plays a really big role. The ‘lighter’ you can carry yourself, the easier you’ll find it to get motivated and the easier it will be to stay committed.
Here are a number of key principles in working towards a ‘sexy mindset’. DO NOT try and tackle them all at once — that’s a guaranteed way to fall off the bandwagon. But I’m giving you a few options here to help give you clarity on how to create a sexier and happier version of yourself.
1. Being Positive: It’s the key ingredient. For some people it doesn’t necessarily come naturally — but it is something you can turn around. The way you respond to the circumstances in your life and everything it throws at you is the best place to start. Try finding the positive in every situation; it might feel unnatural at first, but before you know it, it’ll be your natural reaction to anything that happens.
2. Being Real and Authentic: It’s hard, and it can take YEARS, but being comfortable with yourself and happy in your own skin is an incredibly satisfying ‘space’ to be in.
3. Being Happy: Most of us are so lucky to have the lives we’ve been handed. To be grateful for all that you have and not focus so much on what you don’t have is part of a sexy mindset and a fulfilling life.
4. Being Strong: There are going to be challenging times in life where things don’t go the way you hoped, so you need the strength to get through them. In the gym is a great place to start testing and improving your strength by really challenging yourself with the tough workouts.
5. Being Supportive: Everyone is fighting their own battle. Be supportive to others and surround yourself with supportive people.
6. Being Focused: Focus on what YOU are doing and less on what everyone else is doing.
7. Being Committed: The programs I run tend to be in 6-week blocks, because I think that’s a good period of time to stay focused. And I believe in focusing on something which can develop tools for life. There’s no need to jump on to a fad, because the reality is it’s just that … a fad! The tools you can learn with me over 6 weeks are intended to become part of your lifestyle. Give it time. Motivation will only last so long; it’s your commitment to the cause that will see you through. It needs to become part of the ‘new you’ — not a short term plan.
8. Being Balanced: As important as it is to be healthy, it’s just as important to be happy — and for that to happen you need to be balanced. Your life should be a good balance between your health, your career, your friends, your family and your social life. Just like your health and headspace, balance is an ongoing challenge and something you need to constantly re-evaluate.
9. Being Chilled: Life can be pretty stressful, so it’s important to constantly be working on being more relaxed. I’m a massive fan of meditation, and despite the thousands of dollars I invest into myself each year it’s still the best investment I’ve ever made. Outside of that, I’m big on my clients picking their ‘top 5’ every month: What are the top 5 things that are stressing them out? Can they either distance themselves from them, delegate them or just do them and get them out of the way?
10. Being Passionate: I’m no career adviser, but helping my clients find their purpose and passion is one of the most rewarding things there is. Once that is done it’s like they’re living on cloud nine 24/7!
11. Being Conscious: It might sound a little hippy, but if you’re able to become more ‘aware’ of what is going on with your body and your life on a daily basis it makes it easier to make the necessary changes.
12. Being Independent: Another point that can be quite hard for some people to handle is the ability to be alone/independent. Too many people would rather put themselves in an environment they don’t really want to be in and with people they don’t really want to be with rather than be alone. But once you learn to enjoy your own company, it’s one of the most satisfying things there is!
13. Being Open and Adventurous: You only get one shot at life. Make the most of it. Do new things. Try everything once.
14. Being Confident: And confidence is built around all of the above principles.
Now, go out there and tackle week 2! Remember, that motivation will come and go. Don’t get down on yourself about it; it’s completely natural. The challenge lies in pushing through it until exercise is ingrained in your lifestyle as part of your daily habits.
