The ‘Gladys workout’ built on key phrases used by the premier in her daily 11am NSW Covid update
Gladys Berejiklian is known to repeat some key phrases during her daily Covid-19 updates — so much so that it has inspired a gruelling workout.
A strong line-up of terminology quintessential to the daily NSW Covid update has become the foundation of a gruelling fitness challenge aptly named, “The Gladys Workout”.
The workout calls on participants to execute a certain number of movements such as push ups and sit ups for every time a key phrase is used by Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
Terms used frequently by the premier such as, “please know”, “come forward” and “I can’t stress enough” feature in the list of a total 10 prompts.
With the daily 11am press conferences continuing for anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour, the workout is sure to have participants feeling the burn.
The term “please know” carries a demand of two burpees, while “come forward” is worth two push ups and “I can’t stress enough” is five star jumps.
Eight high knee movements are required when participants hear the term “can I just”, and three sit ups need to be completed for “jabs in arms”.
For the phrase “get tested”, participants will need to squat three times, and any talk of “restrictions” will have them completing four crunches.
Mentions of August 28 — the date Greater Sydney was meant to be released from lockdown — will require one burpee, although its unlikely the date will be used anymore.
When a different speaker steps forward to address reporters, participants can have a drink, but for the duration of a reporter asking a question, they must hold a plank.
Workout goes viral online
The tough workout went viral online this week, with it being shared in a variety of groups on Facebook and by Twitter accounts, attracting thousands of comments and shares.
“If the whole state followed this everyday, by the time we are out of lockdown we’re be a state full of super fit citizens ready to tear down the internal borders and reclaim the whole country for ourselves,” one person wrote in a Facebook comment.
“I think this workout would kill most people,” someone else joked.
Others suggested add-ons with more of Ms Berejiklian’s commonly-used language.
“And can I suggest for every ‘let me be clear’ you bench press your own body weight for twelve reps,” one wrote.
Exercise for when Brad Hazard is a “goose”
“We had already started doing this in our house: one push up for every time ‘health advice’ is mentioned,” another said.
Someone else suggested another movement be included for when “Dr Chant does something silly with her mask or Brad Hazzard makes a complete goose of himself”.
There were 345 new cases announced on Thursday and two deaths, including a man in his 90s who had received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine.
Of the new cases, 116 were in isolation throughout their infectious period, 34 were in isolation for part of their infectious period and 57 cases were infectious in the community.
The isolation status of 138 remains under investigation.
