Selena Gomez designed a bikini to hide transplant scar

The singer has been snapped in a siren red bikini that she designed — but there’s a heartbreaking reason she’s turned to creating swimmers.

Selena Gomez talks swimsuits and scars

Selena Gomez has revealed the heartbreaking reason she designed a range of bikinis — to cover the large scar left by her kidney transplant.

The 26-year-old has spoken out about her collaboration with her best friend Theresa Mingus, on a line of gorgeous red swimsuits for her BFF’s new swimwear label, Krahs Swim.

In a series of videos posted to Instagram, to celebrate the label’s launch, Selena talked about how the surgery to treat her Lupus back in September 2017, left her with a visible scar, which inspired her to make a high-waisted red bikini set.

“I had a kidney transplant, and I like bathing suits that cover where that has been, and make me feel comfortable,” she said.

The range for Krahs Swim, which is actually the word “shark” spelled backwards launched today — and features bathing suits with wide-straps and high-waisted bottoms, and even a chic, Baywatch-inspired one piece, featuring a zip down the front.

“I did have a really good time designing, it was fun,” Selena added.

The ‘Taki Taki’ singer has lived for several years with Lupus, a chronic condition that effects the joints, skin and several organs and can lead to serious fatigue issues.

Complications arising with her condition forced her to undergo a kidney transplant in 2017, which left her with a large scar across her stomach.

The star’s good friend, actor Francia Raisa, donated her kidney to Selena, an act that she has spoken publicly about.

“She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me,” Selena wrote in September 2017.

“There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa.”

Now, back in the spotlight and looking healthier than ever, Selena modelled the swimsuits, wearing a slick of bright red lipstick and tussled hair against a white, beach house style background.

In a post congratulating Theresa on launching her own business, Selena explained the pair met five years ago and have been best friends ever since.

They are regularly pictured by the paparazzi together and have worked together on several projects before.

“She has taught me how to see life in a fun, carefree and uplifting way,” Selena wrote.

“After working with you, it has helped me to understand not to take life too seriously,

“I don’t think I could get through some of the hardest points in my life if it wasn't for you.”

Theresa said she wanted her swimwear to make “every woman feel sexy, confident and beautiful”.

The Selena x Krahs pieces range in price from $57 to $100 and are only available for a limited time.
